Our 18 ton western is over 8m tipped, 16 ton wasn't much less.

Hopefully putting up a silo here this year and planning on going 11m tall enough to tip a arctic grain wagon never know what feed you might want to import and tip up in a silo!

What I’m thinking of asking planners on behalf of my customer is to keep the ridge height at 30’ (10m) and reducing the pitch to 10degrees. This will then give a eaves height of 25’ ( 7:5m)

Justify the extra height to the planners, im led to understand they sometimes think farmers ask for huge sheds needlessly (i know as one told me this) justify reasonably the height and im sure you will be ok.

A quick google of silage trailer manufacturers web sites will give you the tipped heights for their trailers, which will give you information to use to justify the needed height.
You may need to quote the tipped heights of larger trailers than currently used though as they might not be persuaded by the argument of better allow a bit more height for the almost inevitable future increases.

I’d even look at artic heights too just in case you want to store straights etc.

A coherent and well judged argument usually wins planners over especially in more rural counties.
I am amazed at the Cut & Paste objection letters they get. Even they can see it organised

There’s also the issue of silage depth, with tractor height likely to be at least 10 feet and the feeling of the roof being extremely close when within 2 or 3 feet I’d want at least 13 feet of clear headroom above the silage which could easily be a similar height if not higher.

Exactly my thoughts
As I pointed out to customer eaves height isn’t clearance height. After knocking off for purlins, rafter and haunches clearance height at wall side will be 17’ so with walls at 12’ wouldn’t be able to walk down let alone roll with tractor even a 135 !!

As above, tipping under it is one thing, but how high does the silage go and how much clearance do you need for a 435 shovel to drive along it and fit under the roof?

Have eves of silo here 12’ above wall height which is dead on but wouldn’t want any less. Walls are 13’ at shallowest, can tip 18’ trailers near wall but bigger ones need to be more towards centre

Apart from you don't get wet/cold rolling cover back.

Don’t have to collect rain water plus we use ours for calves, wood chip, fertiliser, machinery etc as it empties
