Silage Trailer (kids!)

If you use lighter sheet steel it might roll with your hand, because the curves, all look quite gradual? You could always bond two layers together, if you were looking for thickness in the finished piece.

What does an auger look like before fabrication, I'm not sure?

Think an auger can be made using discs of sheet steel (large washer shape) cut in 1 place and stretched long ways over a pipe,

Probably not that clear but you might get what I mean

Yes I understand what you mean, I was thinking the same technique myself. My other option was to use an auger from a feed pipe like that used in a mill which I can get my hands on and wrap around a pipe - a lot less frabrication. That's a long way off though! I tried practising on some 2mm sheet metal this evening with my antique arc welder and its a none runner! Fried right through even on lowest amp.Think a mig is in order - how easy are they for a complete novice to use and anything to look out for when buying one??

Push with your hand instead of pull, and you will be fine. Think some of the better hire shops have them, just to have a go ........

I used the inner leaf of the kingspan roof cladding shown above (just pealed it off the insulation). It's very light and matched the corrugated look of the real thing pretty well!

That's a really good idea. I have the real version of silage trailer. I would love to make one for my son for his pedal tractor. Would you happen to have the size of the trailer and what the type of metal is where. I'm aware of weight so want to keep it light. Did u use 20mm box iron.thanks d

I will sell you one!! I actually don't have the exact measurement at hand but its based on a 16ft trailer at 1:5 scale. If its for a rolly pedal like you say your probably best go 1:6, its was trial and error for me, my first attempt weighted a ton!your in the lucky position that you have the real thing to work off, I just had the picture on the website! To summarise, it's as follows;
Crate Frame: 20mm angle
Side cladding: kingspan cladding
Side uprights: 16mm hardwood
Floor: ply
Chassis: 25mm box
Drawbar: 75mm box
If you want more photos or measurements just drop me a pm

You"ll find any amount of them on eBay.just search 8" puematic wheels. I just sprayed hub white. To be honest they where the one thing I wasn't that happy with, I wanted wider flotation type but they could not be got. Best of luck with it, if there's anything else I can help with just ask and don't forget some pics when your done!

Well I eventually got around to making a start on the second part of the project. Decided upon basing it on a Taarup/Knerveland 10X trailed harvester. First thing was to upgrade my welder to deal with <1mm sheet metal.
When with this

Then I knocked up a quick sheet bender or brake out of 3 bits of angle.

Started with the reeler... Quite happy with it with the considering first time bending steel and mig welding. 10 points for who can spot the design flaw!

Maybe more obvious at this angle

That's awesome, but is the auger going the same direction?
Yes, well done! The auger came ready made so I left it the way it was. Initially I thought id just cut the flights off the bar, turn it 180
degrees and tack it back on but found out the hard way that doesn't work(n)

Is my prize the second one you make?
Let me make my one first!there's quite a bit of work left in this one yet. Any ideas how I can easily make the flights on the right hand side go in the opposite direction...I'm a bit disappointed because everyone has noticed it!i even took a section out in an attempt to confuse ones eye but it obviously hadn't worked!

If you cut the tube in the middle, flip and reweld? Just trying to work out if you still end up the same way

Would it be hard to cut the welds again and pull every disk in the opposite direction? Think you would only have to do 2 full disks on the short right hand screw?

Looks tidy ...........

Thanks, yes that's the way I thought it would have to be done but it's 2.5mm thick so not that easy to do with my tools anyway. Considering it's not going to be actually lifting grass I think it may just have to do. I was just unsure was there a simple way I hadn't thought off.
