Silage

So I opened the silage pit about a month ago and I am having a problem with making a clean cut the whole way down. The top bite is nice and clean but the rest is like I have taken the bucket to it (I am at the point where I am taking 3 and and half. bites across the face of the pit). The spikes are fairly new last year at the oldest the blades are sharpened once a week and I am also pushing down on the silage as I cut it bit it still doesn't do it. Does anyone else have any advice on what to do I will take pictures of the pit tomorrow and post them so you can see it

How well compacted is it? If you push your finger in at the face, how far will it go in?

an how far are the blades from the tines?
my gut feeling is if you been sharpening too much you have lost the profile and the knife is squeezing the silage rather than cutting

I have had my work colleague look at it he was in new Zealand for a holiday and came back and had a look and we are putting it down to it not being compacted enough

This is the silage pit we are saving the bales for lambing, we are a early march lambing so we can chuck bales out in the Feild if there's not much grass

I’d say it’s not compacted enough too. File is best used on a shear grab really but I’m guilty of a quick whizz off with the grinder and sanding disc myself so cant talk really.

it does look like its been shoved in fast then had the top rolled

Looks 100% like that. Top grab full has sheared but the rest has just mauled it’s way through.

Just for everyone to know now I have gotten further back it is now exactly what you want in a pit smooth all the way down the face we haven't changed anything we do still taking grab fulls like we did before it's just got more compact the further in we got
