Silotite penny pinching rant

They actually blamed the hauliers with mine! It was to a degree as the pallet was just stood on its own in the middle and not really strapped down. If it was up against the headboard with a strap it would of been ok. I don't think the drivers get a say in how the lorry is loaded though.

Nah, pallets need to be individually stable and not rely on contact with other pallets.

Most will be delivered through pallet networks and could be placed next to lower height pallets possibly carrying fragile goods and not as full loads.

Yes I agree. But I think they use a particular carrier (possibly dhl) to move in bulk so they will fill curtains der and move them ok. It's when they start sending out part loads that it goes wrong!

We have been baling contractors for the past 30 odd years & in that time, other than the odd sample or trial roll every bale has been wrapped with silotite.

A few weeks back the brother went to our supplier for another pallet, as he has done for years. As soon as he got it out on to the main road the pallet started to sway from side to side, so much so he crawled home with the jeep & trailer.

The problem is silotite, in their cost cutting wisdom are now using less shrink wrap on the pallet, but more importantly have done away with 4 little bits of cardboard on the corners, which held the top and bottom layer of rolls together. A bit like angle iron.

When I lifted it off the trailer to put it in the shed this happened.

Luckily enough the only thing killed was a barbecue, hate to think what could of happened if a child or pet had been there!....all for the want of a bit of cardboard & shrink wrap.
the problem weve had is the wooden pallets are rubbish only single slats on some ,and some of those stacker lift trucks on wagons don't have wide forks ,and some of the certified fork-litt operatives don't have the forks wide enough and the packs tend to try and split from the middle so after seveal movements packs are slack . early packs used to have corner reinforcing protecters and more shrink-wrap

I sent two pallet loads of Silotite back as they were scattered all over the floor of the courier lorry.

Many of the cardboard boxes were torn and the outer surface of the plastic was damaged. Goodness knows how far the driver had to have had them rattling about loose to have caused so much damage.

Second lot came properly strapped on with a lot of extra cling film applied by the courier, but still no corner cardboard reinforcements. One pallet fell apart after I'd lifted it off :banghead:

I've used Silotite for years, but with the endless list of ridiculous excuses about why the price hasn't dropped despite the oil being at its lowest for years, the rolls getting shorter so that there's a bale less, and now scrimping on the packing, I'll be looking at an alternative supplier for next year.

It's too bloody expensive as it is.

Perhaps an email to Minster Films & copy in Silotite. asking them to review their packing/handling/forwarding procedures.
Or just send them a link to this thread, and point out that nobody has an issue with the packaging of their competitors' product?
Our supplier has told them to get in touch with us, had a missed call & voicemail so far but will see what happens when we connect.

Pretty sure we had a pallet of silotite in the shed still that I offloaded last week. No corner supports just plastic wrap. It leant to one side when I took it off the truck so had to put it down and lift from the lean side to get it into shed without a collapse.
Had a look at the other makes pallet we have in the shed and the packing is the same

Does anyone else find that Silotite does less bales per roll than it used to.Always used to do 33 bales, but it got down to around 30 over a few years(same wrapper) never had a problem with it,but went back to Unterland which does 32/roll and is the most consistent wrap ive ever used.
Those smaller Unterland pallets are no joy to handle on pallet forks tho as they are thinner but the same height.

That's the problem when you squeeze our margins too hard! Talk about have your cake and eat it
The cost of bale wrap has near doubled in little over ten years.

The cost of grass seed to grow the stuff that goes into it has more than doubled.

Fertiliser prices have in some years nearly trebled.

The sale price of my cattle has remained largely the same.

And you have the utter cheek to suggest that WE THE FARMERS ARE SQUEEZING YOUR MARGINS???????:mad::mad::mad:

Come on lads lets be fair here these poor boys and girls at NWF couldn't afford to have a new BMW this year they had to settle for a skoda instead because those blasted farms just didn't bother to pay the bills. How very dare they try and keep themselves a float whilst still keeping food on the nations tables and their own!
It's high time these companies realise something

NO FARMERS = NO MORE AG MERCHANTS.

Just to wrap this up as it were, got a phone call back in the week, we got an iffy pallet that hadn't enough shrink wrap on it, they are putting more on them now, but not putting the cardboard on the corners. The cardboard was to protect the shrinkwrap from the sharp edge of the boxes & had no part in making the pallet more stable ( well it may not have been there for that purpose but definetly helped support the pallet imo ) sorry for the trouble, have a free roll of wrap.

We shall see what happens as time goes on, free rolls never did much for me....
