Silverline tools.

Anyone bought any tools from Silverline? Were they half decent or cheap rubbish?

Our 15 year old has developed an interest in all things mechanical and has bought himself a little non-runner Fiat hatchback to tinker with as he learns. So far he's been using my tools which I have no issue with as he looks after them, but we thought it might be a nice idea to get him a basic set of tools as a reward for the effort he put in studying for his recent exams.

Any other reasonably priced brands worth checking out? I bought a lot of Bergen and US Pro stuff in my teens and still use to this day, but they don't seem to be available in any local motor factors or tool outlets.

I’m a dealer for silverline tools. Nothing wrong with them for the price. They are genuine on their warranty. They aren’t in the same league as snapon but they aren’t the price. And considering a life time warranty on a lot of things not bad. If there is any thing you want, I can have a word with my sales rep, see if he would send some thing out for you to look at and gauge wether it’s for you!

I had a half decent Silverline set of Sockets Spanners etc when my Halfords and Bahco stuff were stolen and I needed tools in a hurry.

Good enough for the money I thought was happy... Still have most of it in one piece but replaced what was stolen.

I bought a far bit of silverline tools about 10 year ago off a mate that was selling tools and some products were great but their adjustable wrench's were so coarsely threaded that they were all but useless as they kept jumping open. Wire cutters and cordless drill and socket rachets were also a waste of money.

Thanks for the replies. Only really looking at buying him some sockets, ratchets, ball pen hammer, screwdrivers etc. I've got plenty of spanners that I can pass down (had more than 30x 13mm spanners at the last count, I'm a bit of a tart for a bargain).

I only thought of Silverline as our local tool hire/sales place stock them and have a good selection off the shelf.

I'll probably have a bit of a clear out and give him anything I already have more than one of, but there will always be bits and pieces he needs. I've got a spare Mac Tools top box he can have to start him off.

It's a bit of a labour of love to be honest, my first job was helping out in a local garage when I was 12 and I kept working there until I left home in my late teens, so when the little man showed some interest in repairing his two-stroke dirt bike it was a bit of a boost to me.

For what you are looking for Silverline will be more than adequate - I have a set of their ratchet spanner’s a few sockets and they do the job. I bought the cheapest branded name I could find with a lifetime guarantee and would buy them again. I also have a load of Bahco but they are 3 and 4x the price

Buy him a Halfords Advanced set - they're cracking value, I have the 200 piece one & can't fault it http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/...=-1&categoryId=255215&request_type=bestseller

The biggest frustration I had when tinkering around as a teenager was having to rummage around trying to find a tool that I may or may not have - the 200 piece set contains most things & makes it easy to see what you have. In addition a couple of extra extension/wobble bars and a big torque bar rather than using a scaffold pipe on a ratchet! Pretty much anything else needed can be obtained as & when required. If he looses interest, you have a handy kit with a lifetime warranty to keep in the back of your car.

think the OP has said he already has a vast collection of spanners and just wants a legitimate reason to divest himself of some by adding them to a new basic socket set.
i like his thinking [just seen he is a Scot, but could easily qualify as a yorkshire man]

Cheap has a quality of its own and all that, but its like chrome plated liquorice, fkin rubbish.
Wouldn't touch anything with silverline on it now, had them all, electrical tools, air tools, those assortment boxes of fuses, clips, pins, air connectors ect...might be ok for tinkering but its just diabolical sh!t for a professional user

I've a few bits of silver line, the ratchet spanner is OK.
The ratchet to replace a lost 1/4 inch drive less so.
The halfords professional is pretty good though, and bought on offer not silly money for what you get.
Same could be said of draper expert etc.

a private conversation between you two could yield a fairly comprehensive silverline tool kit fro you lad , after a bit of TFF discount, mates rates and a little turn of the metaphoric pencil sharpener;);)

I ve had some Silverline spanners it's very annoying that the sizes rub off over time but the spanners them selves were OK. I would happily buy draper, sealey machine mart, faithful, Stanley, bergen stuff .
