I ve had some Silverline spanners it's very annoying that the sizes rub off over time but the spanners them selves were OK. I would happily buy draper, sealey machine mart, faithful, Stanley, bergen stuff .
I went round my set with some numbered punches.

I've tried a couple of Silverline tools, they were awful. I will always avoid them, I'd rather have Sealey/Draper Expert.

Having tried most budget makes.. I think that for budget stuff, the top end Clarke stuff is hard to beat for value.

My personal motto is, buy the best you can possibly afford. Spanners are one of those things that you really need to be good, otherwise you have a shocking time rounding off nuts and bolt heads at the most awkward times.

Even for a kid...

buy him some decent tools and let him know how much they cost , some thing decent to store them in so he can see when any tools have not been returned , he more likely to look after them , find too cheap tools can damage hard ware you are trying to take apart .

Aldi Workzone tools are good value for money, as are Draper Expert and Halfords Professional, especially if any of these are on special offer.

I cannot comment on Silverline, but IMO the above brands are good quality mid range tools that are more than adequate for most people who need professional tools, but don’t want or need to spend a fortune on, or risk losing, the very best tools.

Think the Silverline tools in my workshop were bought for a particular job which would be a one off, as long as they didn't bend, break or fall apart for that job then they were OK. Wouldn't buy them for daily use though.

Update: The ring spanners and ratchet spanners were pretty decent, the open ended combi spanners were shite and have gone in the scrap bin already; there was just too much flex in the jaws.

Probably be OK for occasional basic DIY use, but not up to dealing with Italy's finest corroded steel fittings.

Sockets seem decent enough, but the ratchets are coarse and I doubt they'll last much longer with Junior Beowulf hitting them with a hammer every time a rusty bolt needs some oomph and he can't be bothered walking 4 foot across the workshop to get a breaker bar.

I misread that as a 4 foot breaker bar - proper job. ;)

Not read all the comments, but I use silverline spanner’s and sockets, so far I having managed to break them. Had a 28mm spanner on a bolt, with a tube on hitting the end with a sledge and it survived. Sockets are same, get well abused but haven’t broke yet
