Thursday 29th August 2019 from 1pm-4pm
Kipscombe Farm, Countisbury, EX35 6NE. Kindly hosted by the National Trust
Booking essential for a free lunch: [email protected] or 07970 795808.

National Trust staff will be sharing the National Trust’s progress towards silvopasture practices on their farm at Kipscombe. Lindsay Whistance from the Organic Research Centre and Rob Wolton from the Devon Hedge Group will also be sharing their expertise.

Introducing silvopasture, discussing what it is, the associated benefits and potential downsides. We will consider the existing features on the farm and discuss how these could be managed to increase the benefits of trees to livestock. National Trust staff will talk us through the measures they have implemented already, including rotational grazing, and discuss the measures that they will be implementing in the future. This will provide an opportunity to look at the benefits and logistics of setting this type of system up as well as current policy, grants and support available.
Lindsay Whistance will discuss the numerous ways in which livestock use and benefit from trees including shelter, health and nutrition and also shade, behaviour and general welfare as fundamental considerations of designing good animal environments. Rob Wolton will discuss hedges and managing them for provision of shade, shelter, browse, environmental benefits and natural capital.
