How much power will a 4m version need on hilly but lightish land? 165hp tractor on 650 tyres available. Mostly into pressed ploughed ground or behind a weaving subdisc.

and if we’re short on power what’s to stop me removing the hopper and mounting one on front links instead to get rid of some dead weight to drag about? And would it make a difference to power requirement?

I’d have thought you’ll be about on the limit with 165hp , what tractor would it be ?
NH T7.210 local vaderscrap dealer who also sells the blue tractors have told me I’m very bottom end with a 4m rapid. so written them off, besides not really a fan of them as too many moving wearing parts on anything I could afford.

Freeflows work best with lots of power and speed. Having run my 4m on 190hp I wouldn’t recommend 165hp. I remember feeling I was flogging the tractor for all it was worth without actually bossing the job. Got it on 240hp now and it sings.
Sure you will find someone who runs it on 130hp with no trouble but in reality they like HP to do well.

It will be on its knees uphill, moving hopper will need more power to move the seed to the back, (not even sure how you could pipe it and turn?) I have over 300 hp on 4 meters and have the all the front cultivating tines in 4" and go at over 10k, you need the soil flying to make it work properly.
100 Acres /day is possible, but they need power, the more you have the better, your not going the break it.

The best thing about the freeflow is the weight for crushing clods and sealing the seed down. Would be a shame to take the tank off. 180hp pulled mine a treat but no hills. They were jd horsepower tho 😎

Pulled a couple of 4m. FreeFlow's with a JD 6920S - dualled up all round no problems, sure it went down quicker than up - but was OK.
I wouldn't have wanted anything less than this - but the dual wheels made a huge difference especially on the slopes.

Pull a 4m vad system disc with 120hp flat. It was cheap to buy and wearing metal will do me a while. I don’t have hills. It’s better with 160hp but not transformational.

You need speed and for this you need power- the whole point of these cultivator drills is that they cover ground fast and work it down at the same time. If you are only going slowly you won't do anything to the seed bed but push the clods to one side. It will work and put seed in at 4 kph but it won't be doing anything for you but leaving a carpet of golf balls behind it. Vaddy is no different really, you want about 40-50hp per metre of working width.

So in other words if I gotta make a seed bed fit for planting onions in prior to the drill I may as well just buy a 6m mounted tineseeder instead
