Simba Metflow

I have made a low disturbance tine drill from a Simba Free Flow using the J J Metcalfe points.
It is a 3m drill. I have used 16 tines over 3 rows. 16 seems a good compromise between clearance and row width.
I got a local fabricator to do the welding to my design.

Before anyone comments, I am aware, thanks to Twitter, that the welding may have weakened the tines. It was not an issue I was aware of until it was too late so it may be an expensive balls up!
Hopefully there is enough spring in the coils to let it work ok.

I just need some ground clearing now to try it out.

Yes post some pics when working please. So spacing is 9"? I wonder how the tine will go in hard ground. Do you think you could have done it bolting the new point on the tine without welding? Have a 4m here so very interested!
Spacing is 18.75 cm. I am sure they could be bolted or more likely clamped to the tines somehow. The tines need to be shortened though, otherwise they are too long with the points fitted. I just thought welding would be stronger and more elegant.

I know where there is a tatie box full of those tines all new never used how much are they worth each to you

The tines don't break ,when they do break, around the area where you have welded so I would doubt that the heat will have weakened them. But I do think that the tines will fairly flex backwards due to the length of sowing boot that you have attached.
Be interesting to see if they will stand it.
Thanks for the info. I have shortened the tines by about 100mm. With the Coulter attached, they are the same overall length to the tip as with ordinary tines and Free Flow coulters.
My neighbour made some narrow tips himself and welded them to slightly modified FF points with standard FF boots. He drilled spring beans this spring and they worked OK. Admittedly stone free and not dried like concrete but it encouraged me to have a go.

You shouldn't have a problem with the welds as the springs are quite strong and meaty and heat usually just affects the temper. The other problem found with welding springs is introducing surface stress and failure paths. If you make any more to help relive stress make unequal welds which finish at different heights and grind out the undercut. Agri linc do the tines at a good price.

Thanks for the advice.
