Probably, like The Archers, part of a post war push to encourage agricultural production (even got his National Service deferred).
How times change. It shows food was once a valued commodity.
However, one thing never changes..
....everyone, no matter who or where they are, HAS to eat EVERY day.
Funny how government seems to have lost sight of the value of home produced food.

Its not what others think of you its what they think of your animals, well at least it should be and who says it can't increase profit
just as a bit of info my dad used to sell his cattle at the local market they were shown first won prizes and certificates if good enough and then were auctioned to the local butchers who then butchered prepared and sold locally in their shops that cow having not moved more than 5 miles from were it was born . Thats how it was done then pride in what you do and how you do it .

And the rosettes were displayed in the butchers to show the quality of what they sold.
Quite a few farmhouses still have a dresser full of silver cups won at shows etc. Different era. Pride in producing top quality crops and livestock, which in those days probably led to top profits.......
at least then we were getting a decent living
