I have often thought the same

Rear packer also looks like it could be a nightmare in wet soil ?

Finally sorted out some decent slot closing this year. I usually have to do a pass with my 6 metre grass harrows after the drill and before the rolls but just shackling some harrows straight onto the chain bar makes a perfect job.Autumn 2013 020.jpgAutumn 2013 022.jpgAutumn 2013 018.jpg

A few comments seem to have been thrown about that these drills are very expensive?!

Anybody have any figures?

New, I think I heard last year they were around £24K (?) for a 3m as pictured above. Secondhand, they are as rare as hen's teeth and I think George sells most of them. Somewhere around £14-15k for a tidy'ish one.

Why are you so afraid to ask for the price...?!

For god's sake, £19.5K 3m box or £24.5K air. Roughly. They used to be a lot cheaper but then so did everything else.

Doesn't it end up with a great big mat of straw under the chains? And how do you get down the road with them?

Only did one second wheat this year but after two rakings and a bit of rain, the straw all broke up and disappeared. If it had been like in the first photos from 2008, them maybe the straw would ball up. I have had that problem with the regular hanging chains sometimes.

To transport I just split the harrows into three sections, roll each one up separately and chuck them on top of the roller.

We find that if we cannot close the slot with our Kuhn (probably because it's just too wet and we should not be drilling!) if we leave the land for a few hours, a pass with the straw rake at about 30-45 degrees from the drilling line does a great job and then if the weather is on our side "over with the rolls"..
