Simtech press modification

I'm running a 4m simtech. It's been a great drill. The only down side I have found is that the press rings on the back clog up with soil when it gets a bit tacky. Has anyone modified theres and changed the steel ring press for a couple of tyres? I have heard a few have taken every other ring off, has that worked?

Last autumn I took every other ring off but then never got back out to drill so can’t comment! But my neighbour has one and took his off and said it improved. He was drilling into cultivated/ ploughed ground.

I took every other ring off my 4m last year and used the draft control on the tractor to take some of the weight off the roller. It certainly allowed the drill to go much wetter than it did with all the rings on. My only word of caution would be that fields I drilled with this setup yielded poorly but that might be down to the later drilling date, soil type and the fact that it stayed wet for the next five months, surely it can't do that again. If you scroll back to October last year on my Twitter account there are some pictures I think.

I took all the rings off a foot either side of the centre last year , just because it was such a pig to unblock . Unbelievable how quick these rollers pick mud up. As Michael s says though, I also find that if it isn't fit for the drill to work as it is, establishment can be compromised. When conditions are right I wouldn't choose any other drill .

Cows r us, how much lower are the wheels set below the roller? Please keep us posted when you get it in the field.
I lifted the press about 3 inches off the ground and bolted the wheels on at that level. You need to make sure you have travel both ways on the arms. The tyres are fairly low profile. 340/55 16. They are fitted too mchale Bale wrappers.
I've had the drill running today. I can't seem to upload the video from my phone as it says it's too big. I've posted them on my twitter account @farmerbiff. Working pretty well so far.

Having dug the press rings out once too often this season, I have now taken some sections off.

Each ring has 4 sections, and I took two alternate sections off the middle six rings. I tried to stagger the sections removed from press wheel to press wheel.

Wow! What a difference it made. It hasn’t bunged up again since. I should have done it years ago.....

How did the chains go covering the slots up without the packer?
