I have no experience with them at all but an interest in their simplicity and relatively low power requirement .

Anyway, If they used to pick up a swath as compared to direct cutting grass will they cut it much less or maybe not at all or just throw it up the spout just a bit bruised

Used to have a setup like this years ago without the mowed grass . 10 to 12 acres a day but he looks like he’d easily do 20+ a day . Very simple , reliable machine. No need for metal detector as everything went up the shoot. Dad used to draw in the loads and sometimes I’d have the next load nearly filled and he’d still be trying to hitch on his trailer at the bottom of the field, happy days

when we first stated silage we did much the same. a kidd double chop which was used to mow it with the auger cover open and leaving a 4inch stubble. it was left to wilt for 24--36hrs then under cut and lifted with the same machine leaving a 1--2 inch stubble. made good silage. unfortuneately a flail broke off twice in the time we had it and went through the flywheel. managed to true it up the first time but needed a new flywheel the second time.

Mowing in front of the double chop with a two drum was usually the first step away from direct cut. Once people seen how rivers of effluent was but a mere trickle it made them think again.

What was the reason(s) for mowing with the forager?

Yes dry it out a bit first, flail mowing would do that better as well i supposeeven better than a mowcon would.
sheep prefer it a bit drier as well.
