How will the testing weather conditions this year affect the Autumn suckler calf market, which many of us rely on to be strong?

Can't be as strong as previous years can it? Silage shortage, corn more expensive, fat trade down on previous years, calves not as fit as previous years because of the lack of milk. I'm guessing they will be 150 quid a head down for 8-10 month old suckler calves.

Store cattle and lambs dearer here than ever. Farmers really are eternal optimists, fat lambs here today £75-£80 , plenty of store lambs up near £70 and some over.
Went to a store lamb sale week past on Saturday , think it was the dearest sale I’ve ever been to.

The best are always a decent trade and ought to hold up. The also-rans will be cheap/sticky and hard to shift I'd have thought. Just look at the sheep trade, breeders and stores.

Longer keep suckler calves been a bad trade in July and August. Everyone on about lack of feed and others talking forage prices up. There was loads of hay in the auction passed out near £150 a tonne with the sole purpose to set prices no intention to sell it, this doesn’t help. It’s greened up a fair bit up here and those cattle have lifted a bit. Think the worst is over.

We had first two spring born suckled calf sales up here with Fort William on Saturday and Portree on Monday stot average would be back about 15 p a kg and hfrs 30 to 40 p a kg .The stronger calves would be taking the biggest hit.

:eek:thats crap trade

I had 71 killed on Friday, avg 19.05kg - came back at £77.20. They'd be 40kg live.

Yea and he was one of the better prices, good char lambs. The problem in this part of the world is there are so few outlets for lambs, it’s in the hands of half a doz ppl really and when there’s bigger numbers coming out they take the pee.
You could hardly get lambs into a factory here at the minute unless your well known to them .

Sounds similar to here. Dumfries market has 4 buyers with God knows how many accounts each... plus they start selling at mid day - after Newton Stewart (they wait on the buyers coming from there)! Total shambles, its why I put my lambs away direct.
