Sinusitis

Anybody else suffered from this and found a cure?

Been to doctors several times and tried nasal sprays and antihistamines but not worked. One spray worked for a few weeks then it returned to normal.

My breath stinks because of it, can't hear properly, taste affected.

When working in dusty conditions like grain bins it affects me badly often having to take several days off afterwards.

A nurse I used to work with had sinus problems and swore by steam inhalations. Add some Olbas oil or menthol to a bowl of water as hot as you can stand it - head over bowl, towel over head to keep the steam in and breathe. Very old remedy and will hopefully bring you some relief. If problem continues or gets worse nag your dr for a referral to an ENT specialist. Hope that helps.

Had it bad years back, started after a really nasty head cold absolutely killed me for about a year none of docs stuff helped lived on ibruprofen to keep sore heads from turning to migraines(paracetamol wouldn't touch it had to be anti inflammatories) then just cleared up one day! but will flare up in dusty conditions. Get masked up and stop dust is best I find and slightest twinge take an ibruprofen. Stopping smoking this last year has made a big difference and now down to about once a month when feel it starting.

Tryed that it did give immediate relief but seemed to irritate it long term, shifts from cold to hot or dry air to humid seemed to annoy as well

You have my every sympathy! I get it very occasionally but the last time l had it l was in agony with it. Only very strong painkillers from the doctor gave me any sort of relief. Then l discovered the Neilmed Sinus Rinse ( Available from Amazon, Boots etc.) Its a really marvellous thing!

I have bad sinus occasionally, have found the sudafed nasal spray very good but it says to only use it for a short time before seeing the GP, not sure if thats cos of some long term damage or not but I stopped using it and within a cou;le of days my nose cleared up again. Worst I have been affected with it is on a flight, I was sat opposite my wife and as we went in to land I had the worst shooting pain across the top of my eyebrow and bent double in pain, the people next to me were looking at me with a large amount of concern (so Im told). Tried pain killers but found the nasal spray worked better.

I would consider wearing a face mask - I cant go near straw bedding it kills me for a few days. The pain is awful and the swelling. Sounds like you wont solve it if you are in a dusty atmosphere. The worst thing you can do is continually spray it burns the inside of the tissues and makes the condition worse. Look into medi salt solutions. Boots sell a water nasal spray thats isotonic and keeps the area moist. Use salts to bring back the health of your nose and tilt head for a few minutes to get the moisture into the cavity - google it. Another option is organic cyder vinegar (with mother) dilute slightly and gargle it really kills everything smelly - unsure if you can gently sniff it (diluted) as it is a mild antiseptic. Avoid alcohol and spicy foods it makes the tissue swell more.

The OH gets it bad and discovered she's got polyps with attitude so sniffles or allergic reactions cause sinusitis quite easily. Normal steroid sprays didn't touch them, sudafed nasal spray gets used every two hours or so which isn't good but is the only thing that provides relief. Apparently the sudafed spray effects become less the more you use it according to the consultant and he gave her a steroid to put in a neilmed irrigator as mentioned earlier. She hasn't managed to use it regular enough to pass judgement on it yet.

I've only had sinusitis once and we were working on the rubber drive donut through the floor of the manitou. Hurt like buggery bending down looking the the floor plate so I have sympathy if you have it. I went to the docs and he said sinusitis and should go in a few days but come back if it doesn't. I asked what he would do if I came back and he said ab's so I told him to give them to me now and save a lot of hassle! They seemed to work surprisingly quick.

I get it if I don't take my antihistamines for a few days. Lying on the bed on your back with your head off the edge can give some relief. Antibiotics should clear up the infection but you really need to find the cause. Get some tests done, I discovered I was allergic to tree pollen which I would never have guessed. I take antihistamines daily and it's great

What does the sudafed spray do with prolonged use? Is it really bad for you? I've tried to find some info but never got anywhere!

The consultant said it would do no harm (not a recommendation by the way) but it would not be as effective and would need to use it more often the longer it's used. This means if you have a flare up there is no plan B for short term relief. She even used it during pregnancy to no ill effects that we know of.

You can get device that holds hot water as already described but with nose mask attached. This is better than bowl and towel as you can sit and watch tv etc without everyone taking the ****! beconase nasel spray used regularly will desensitise the nasel passages often reliving the symptoms and last but not least, use damp cloth inside standard dust face mask whenever handling stuff you are alergic to. happy sneezing!

I had it 5 years ago. After ending up with a camera up my nose, the consultant discovered I had a deviated septum. Went into hospital as a day case where they sent a draining rod up my snout. The doc had recommended the Neil Med sinus rinse while I waited for the op, and that helped a bit.
Everything was fine till they started playing up again at the start of this year. A couple of weeks of antibiotics and the sinus rinse mended them, but I'll wait and see till my next bad cold

I too have a deviated septum which means that one side doesn't drain properly and I get sinus issues. Consultant surgeon said a few years ago he could trim it to open it up if I wanted - I said no as I didn't really want the op, but I wish I'd said yes now!
Long term use of nasal sprays and decongestants isnt good - they become less and less effective. If i take a decongestant now (like a cold'n'flu tab) the first one will work, but any subsequent ones won't. Prevention is the best option - dust masks etc, and stay healthy to try to avoid getting colds and flu. Olbas Oil is good.

any nasal spray on sensitive tissue isnt going to do the job after a while - I found the sprays were great at first however after a while started to burn the inside of my nose and made it all worse. I would try to use the water based salt spray from Boots called Sterimar Isotonic.

You would think doctors would be aware of this. I had a spray that also contained antihistamine. As you say worked great for a start, thought I was cured. Then just went back to normal again. Normal being blocked.
