Very sorry to learn of the passing of David Naish

I remember he was a calm and strong voice during the BSE crisis
I have just read his obituary in The Times, and very interesting too.I didnt know former NFU president Jim Turner,Lord Netherthorpe, was his uncle.A big man like him,6foot 4,and 19 stone, and said to have used his size to advantage wherever he could, negotiating with Ministry and Government mandarins.

Interesting. I do not understand how - when a realistic threat of physical violence is removed from the equation - the size of someone can give any advantage during any 'negotiation'. Once the threat of hurting someone has gone, let's call it what it is - bullying, what have they got left? Answer = the same as everyone else, the strength of their arguments. Plus, a failed attempt at some sort of physical coercion would leave them lower in the opinion of others.

You have got the wrong end of the stick here, and of course there would never be any threat of physical violence. But sheer size does sometimes give one a competative advantage, even in verbal negotiations. It is interesting to note that if two equally suitable applicants go for a job interview, statistics show that the physically taller of the two will more likely get the job.I wrote the piece partly in reference to what the late agricultural writer John Cherrington said in relation to Jim Turner. If you havent read Cherringtons books, they are well worth reading.Even today, very apt about the Common Market and EU.

No, no stick mishandling here, well aware of all that, just don't understand it in the modern and relatively civilised world.

I was looking for an appropriately short link to the Invader Zim cartoon - from an alien world where the tallest rule - but can't find one. Instead... :)
