Skilled operator advert, £20,000 a year?

As I've mentioned further up the thread, I got 24Kpa to extract semen from pigs. Why on earth would anyone with skills apply for a job paying unskilled wages? An employee with a couple of years experience stacking shelves would net more than that.

They do it because that's what it pays and they like driving tractors, which isn't too demanding or terrible of a job once you have basic skills - it can't be hard if I did it - There will be lots of hours at overtime rate, which is often not available in some jobs, so looking at total yearly income, its not that bad.

How can you be an "skilled sprayer operator" with precious experience essential and not hold PA1, 2 and 6?

Overseas operators?
Or perhaps someone drove a sprayer for a business that didn't ask for paperwork?
Hard to do with RT of course but before that, very possible.

So 20k basic for 39 hours a week, is 9.86 an hour? Holidays, sick pay, pension etc.
Minimum wage for 18-20 year olds is 6.56 per hour.
21-22 year olds is 8.36
23 and over is 8.91

Think I got that right? I bet a 20 year youngster (perhaps an Irish lad as they seem to be popular with contractors) wouldn't mind a tenner an hour basic for sitting on a tractor, add in heaps of overtime, they'll think its a great job.
They only need stick it a year and the company can employ their next victim. (y)

can’t tell you how much work I did as a lad for others and got very basic pay . Bit miffed really , live n learn I guess
Yes but that was then. I still have good memories, background and experience to fall back on . What have youngsters got these days? I really wish I'd also shown more interest in my Dad's other hobbies and skills too . He was a graduate but also did National Service as an RAF photographer and a cabinet making apprenticeship and any building project he'll still tackle by watching some YouTube videos or looking at old technical manuals first

You wouldn’t actually be doing very much spraying here between October and May. What do professional sprayer drivers do when it’s raining? They must have some other role surely? It’s just another of the many jobs for me. Jack of all trades, master of none. If all I had to do was drive a sprayer I’d been an expert. Or does it get tedious? Dad once bought a digger as a sideline but ended up nearly full time on it. He packed it in because he got sick of it and carried on farming.

I get pished off that I can't find all day shifts (7am until 9pm) on minimum wage because someone has snaffled either the early or the late. It's a serious PITA when trying to organise work in a hospital.

I suggested someone might be interested in a job share so I could do say six am until twelve, then they could do twelve to six. Was as if I'd just shat in their mouths. Ffs. Was only on a production line.

Saw this job advert on Exmoor Farmers Network, want the applicant to drive a hundred thousand pound machine have extensive experience but only paying £20,000 and you can work Monday to Sunday too! No wonder agriculture has an issue attracting talent, this job would easily be £32-35,000 in an associated field like construction and you wouldn't have to work weekends.

Very much doubt they will get one applicant for that. We advertised at £30,000 per year for 39 hour per week (no overtime available) and had a couple apply who were not suitable anyway. Nobody wants the work and I think we are not far off having to pay £20/hour to get anybody decent to be honest. Its at that point we will all have to take a long hard look at our business's and wonder whether its worth the hassle and fallowing on ELMS will be easier and then use contractors for any work.

My dad was like that. And fortunately he taught us how to set about a job, and teach yourself. He was extremely particular that things were done right, straight, level and neat. He learned a lot doing National Service.

I did manage to get part time at Siemens, 3 days a week before I packed it in completely. I worked as a self employed contractor. It was difficult though with the 2 days on the farm generally being by Sod’s law wet and windy and then it being fine while sat in the office at Lincoln. It was awkward with deliveries and phone calls. Really need something that can be done from home so can nip out into the yard when needed or lay the work aside on a sunny farming day. Making chicken arks? Software programming? Proof reading?

Tbh I'll try harder to find something after harvest. Might see if I can find some work on the back of a potato harvester. I'm really only after six hours a day in a factory regularly, or ad hoc seasonal stuff. It needs not be brain surgery. Just want to do a fairly basic job and get paid by someone else so I have actual money outside the business. I'm not looking for a career.

If you advertise a job @ £20 an hour you will simply get the same ppl applying if you advertised it at £10 per hour..
The lifestyle doesn't suit the modern way of life anymore, it's not all about money.

One of the big things we are now competing with over here in NI is the 4 days On 4 days Off and its impossible to compete with in terms of lifestyle, 180 days a year ish employment on a 30/35K wage including 30 days holidays a year.
