Just buy a 2nd hand box off ebay

This is how I 'upgraded' from the standard Sky+ box to a Sky+ HD box. It cost me £5
Cost me nowt - they just changed box for me, and dropped monthly subs by £16 when I quibbled about the cost. They can't do anything wrong in our household!

Thanks all. I've done a bit of research on Firesticks etc. I don't have good wifi in the living room despite an extender but I do have a good TP link with an Ethernet connection so that rules out Amazon. I have a good internet connection.

I see there's a parallel thread running on Alternatives to Sky.

Wi-Fi doesn't quite reach to the west wing of your house? ;)

Ha ha! The BT Infinity hub is only 20 feet away but behind 2 brick walls in a house built 100 years ago. The extender isn't very consistent.

I tried that, but they wanted me to sign up to extra channels. I even asked to be put through to the Customer retentions department, but they wouldn't give me anything for free. I already have TV, broadband and phone with them, so there was only really extra channels (I currently have the basic package) or multiroom which would be an upgrade to justify them sending me a new box

I just use a Freesat box on the sky dish that was left by my father when he left the farm house, because I refused to pay for sky subs. I got a Linux engima box with 4 Freesat cards in it. So I can watch/record up to 4 channels at once. Good for the kids over Christmas. Everything is recorded to my nas directly, can then be watched later on any device connected to the network.
Can use internal hard disk also if preferred. Works great
