Sky+ HD box - plug & play?

I have just been given a working Sky+ HD box by a mate who no longer wants his. I currently have a 8 year old non HD Sky+ box and bought a HD telly a couple of years ago.

Do I need to ring Sky & tell them or can I just plug it in and play, transferring my old Sky card across? I am aware that a HD subscription is more but the existing one is fine.

Ring sky get then to pair your card to new box. And tell them you want hd for free or your moving to freesat. Paying for hd is old hat now.
Cards have to be tuned to box to stop people taking card to the pub and letting everyone watch the match

You can pair a card from your account and on the box as well.

get rid of sky, get Kodi ;)

however what you propose in your first post should work just fine, HD is a bit of a waste of time thought really, improvement on a decent screen is not dramatic to my eyes but 4k is a BIG leap forward, trouble with that being limited content in 4k

What is Kodi?

I can't really see the difference between HD and non HD despite a 42" TV. The HD box was free & my old Sky+ is getting old.

Started using kodi on a firestick last week, then got a letter from sky telling me they were putting up my subscription to £38, sky is easier to access than kodi and the recording is good but no way was I paying that, phoned them up and got it for £15.66 a month

Kodi is a program you can install on a Firestick, computer and a few other devices which allows you access online channels on the Internet. If you then install another piece of software such as Exodus, this software/channel allows you to stream loads of tv programmes and movies available currently on UK and US tv, and in the cinema now. It's a bit like a cinema, Amazon Prime, Sky, Netflix, BT and normal tv, all in one.

You need a decent internet signal, and legality is a bit of an issue[emoji848]

I managed to load module onto my smart TV over Xmas, then loaded emg source onto Lodi and now have HD everything on the TV,also have a jailbroken box(30 quid) and that worked straight out the box ,all films and every TV programme in existence, needs at least a 8 to 10mbps connection, very happy with the job thanks

Most HD teles upscale SD signals to not far from HD quality, so I'd agree, not a lot of difference here really. I get a more noticeable improvement in image quality when I clean my glasses.:D

Might be different for a 50" tv I suppose, when resolution might be more noticeable?:scratchhead: I also agree that 4K appears to be a big step up in quality, but then the only 4K TVs I've seen have been silly big ones from folk that have to have the latest toys...
