Do you get any sun on your side of the valley? :)

How high is the building peak?

What pitch are you having?

I have a 3rd of my roof with roof lights, very light and airy no worse than outside on a hot day.

Be generous to 30% coverage on the north side. Less on the south side especially if you have hi-yielders and expect 365 day housing. 17o slope helps; lesser slopes + lots of skylights = a cooking pot

We put quite a lot of sky lights in but not over cubicles to stop cows over heating. Having curtain sides lets a lot of light in. We were wary of putting in to many skylights because of them getting blown out on windy days as we are quite exposed.

i must admit we have just recently been working in a new cow cubicle shed with no sky lights and on the end where the robots are installed there are a few skylights and in the hot weather it was very hot down the end with and very cool through out the rest of the building we installed agri lights from cowcare systems to provide light in the shed when the light level fell to a level. So contrary to what i thought before working here i would have to say for a consistent temperature in the shed i would have to say that i wouldnt install skylights.

High temps are an issue as they can reduce feed intake. Also be careful not to confuse the impact of sunlight through skylights, which can be a problem if there are too many skylights, and the impact of heat build-up in parts of a building that are not well ventilated. Ventilation around parlours and robots is too frequently poor (located in middle of building, no ridge vents above, walls on one or more sides, lots of moisture hanging about......
