whilst doing moisture test today on our skyfall wheat found a couple of grains already had
Shoots appearing has anyone else found this yet?
This is the second time in three years that we have had it sprouting before it's been fit enough to combine

Surely the grain had to be fit before it started sprouting? Unfit grain (depends on how you define that) would be immature and will not sprout. There is also bound to be a dormancy period before it is able to sprout?

Not disbelieving you that wheat has started to sprout. Is there much tolerance before milling quality is ruined?

Sprouting ruins milling quality, it destroys the hagberg.

Looked at cutting it on Monday when moisture was 26% on what was warm windy afternoon and the lowest it had been down to.
Has had heavy showers and then warm sunshine every day since

Two years in three, what lesson have you learned about Skyfall then? :D

It's scandalous a wheat variety with a sprouting index of 4 can get on the recommended list

Why? This trait is one of the RL scores, everyone can see this on the list yet the other benefits ensure it is a variety that is popular - mostly the yield and quality in years when the weather doesn't make it sprout. It has always had a low score for sprouting. Hereward was a mainstay of milling wheat growers for a very long time despite a Hagberg that disappeared with the first rain shower when it was ripe.

If you're aware of the risks when you make your variety choice you have to take responsibility for that choice when it goes wrong.

Because it's my most hated trait in a variety , biggest crops of I ever grew ( Alchemy) sprouted .... total loss by the time it was cut / silaged .

No not had hagberg test yet
Being one of the most popular variety s grown this season most of us must be prepared to take the risk that it can sprout.
Perhaps it's the fact that it can yield as well as the feed variety's with the added value that you may get good milling quality that's the view I took when growing it
2015 it sprouted but was at the back end of the season and was the last
20% of the variety we had to harvest
2016 no issue but hagberg was a bit on the low side
But was surprised that it has shown up so early this year but then the last week has been perfect conditions for it to sprout.

Grew it for 3 years and dropped it last year. Poor yield, poor protein.

Got some leftover in a 4 way mix this year though. I'll check it tomorrow and see what's what in the field.
