Slashers

I am new to tractors and have just bought an old Fiat 550 2wd. It is 55 hp . I want to add a heavy duty slasher for bracken and saplings. What do I need to know regarding the speed and gears on the slashers - I note that people selling slashers often refer to the HP of the slasher

The hp on the slasher is the maximum reccomended so if you put 100hp through a 40hp slasher you will eventually wreck it.buy what your tractor will power and you will be fine.they can take some powering depending what you’re chopping up

If there is any chance that you will hit stone or any other tough objects such as tree roots or stumps etc, buy a unit that has chains and not blades otherwise you will destroy it.

they are usually marketed as Jungle Busters or chain slashers or chain toppers - there are a few videos on YouTube

If you can't see through what you are cutting or don't know what might be there I suggest going slowly so you have a chance to lift the machine if it hits something. I was cutting some scrub years ago with a chain equipped slasher and unearthed some telegraph poles that had been laid there waiting to be used another year. Luckily I was creeping along and had a chance to lift the thing before any harm was done.

with the right jungle buster the telegraph poles will do no harm it amazes me where I have had our machine over the years

I frequently cut scrub up to 6 to 8 feet in height the trick is to reverse in and keep taking little bites at it - plus if you hit anything the buster will jump up off it - if you go in forwards you risk wrecking the tractor steering, radiator and panels

Jesus Christ, the cameraman standing close by when starting it and driver moving chains with engine running.did commentators go to commentary school to learn to speak like that too

Thanks all - I reckon I now know enough to go out and buy a slasher.
Here is a new question
My FIAT 550 has two PTOs -both at the rear of the tractor located one above the other. Both spin at the same time with one anti -clockwise and spinning twice as past as the other . I have not seen this before anyone know anything about this
