Slaughter codes for halal

Rubbish needs thrown out, cut and paste or not. Someone could have a scroll down and take it as gospel.

Normally, I'd agree.

Most common sensed folks should see it as strange though. This newbie reply is to a 20month old post, 3 times - with 2 of the posts saying exactly the same thing...

It's there for all to see what's going on, no reply needed here.

Absolute rubbish. Electric stunning, by law, must render the animal insensible to pain until death.
Rubbish yourself! Muslims and Jews have a religious exemption in the U.K. The law you refer to does not apply to them. Kosher use no stun and Halal use a recoverable stun. The British use a full stun that renders the animal brain dead when the captive bolt is used! .

Animal welfare standards are being unnecessarily lowered by a sharp rise in the slaughter of non-stunned animals, say vets.

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) said the increase over just two years in the number of animals having their throats cut without first being stunned was of grave concern and was a major welfare issue.

In 2013, just 15% of sheep and goats slaughtered were not stunned first, But this rose to almost a quarter (24.4%) of slaughterings between April and June this year, according to the latest figures from the Food Standards Agency.

The increase for poultry has been even steeper; soaring from 3% in 2013 to 18.5% in 2017.

BVA president Gudrun Ravetz said: “This huge increase in the number of sheep, goats and poultry that are not stunned or not stunned effectively before slaughter is a grave concern to our profession.”

Mandatory CCTV
In July, Defra secretary Michael Gove made improving animal welfare standards central to his vision for future farm policy. Last month, Mr Gove announced the government would make CCTV mandatory in all abattoirs in England as part of plans for the UK to become a global leader in animal welfare.

But Ms Ravetz said the number of halal slaughters has outstripped demand from the religious sector and is being sold to the general public unlabelled.

In 2011, the 4.6% of the UK population who identified as Muslim accounted for 24% of lamb and 16% of domestic mutton consumption, according to the AHDB.

AHDB has predicted this to have increased in the years since and announced in July that it proposed to introduce an assurance mark for halal products to support this important sector for lamb producers.

Sound science
But Ms Ravetz reiterated the BVA’s call for all animals to be stunned before slaughter.

“If slaughter without stunning is still to be permitted, any meat from this source must be clearly labelled and the supply of non-stun products should be matched with demand,” he said.

An NFU spokesman said it was up to the government to determine what is appropriate for legally complaint religious slaughter, but farmers wish to see their animals slaughtered in a respectful and humane manner.

“We would, therefore, expect that whatever slaughter method is used, it should place animal welfare as a priority and employ sound scientific principles to its method,” he added.

Recoverable stun - correct.
Animal conscious when throat cut - islamaphobic lies.
“The British” phrase - more islamaphobic divisiveness. Plenty British are Muslims.

Muslims will not accept meat as Halal unless the animal is concious when its throat is cut. It has to be conscious to hear the prayer.

Slaughter Factfile
The slaughter process has two stages:

Stunning, when performed correctly, causes an animal to lose consciousness, so the animal can’t feel pain. The law states that, with few exemptions, all animals must be stunned before ‘sticking’ (neck cutting) is carried out.

Sticking is when an animal’s neck is cut, using a very sharp knife, to sever the major blood vessels in its neck/chest that supply the brain, ensuring rapid blood loss and therefore death.

Slaughter of large animals
Stunning
There are various methods available to stun larger animals, these include:

  • Penetrating captive bolt - used on cattle, sheep and some pigs. A gun fires a metal bolt into the brain of the animal causing the animal to lose consciousness immediately.
  • Electrical - used on sheep, calves and pigs. An electrical current is passed through the animal’s brain via a large pair of tongs, causing temporary loss of consciousness. Some systems also pass the current through the heart, so the animal is not just stunned but also killed.
  • Gas stunning/killing - of pigs, which involves the use of gas mixtures. Pigs are exposed to high concentrations of gas (currently carbon dioxide).
Sticking
After stunning the animal is shackled by a hind leg and hoisted above the ground and the slaughter person sticks the animal.

That’s not true. Most Halal is unconscious at time of throat cutting, but a very small amount of Halal is non stun, for more strict Muslims.

The prayer is to Allah, not to the animal !

I wrote the original post, sadly nothing is been done to stop this method of non stun slaughter. As I said before religion should play no part in animal welfare.I’m sure I have read Belgium has banned non stun from Jan 2019 .Full labelling on meat and including none pre packed meat should be passed as law ASAP.I would like an answer from the farm assurance scheme and Red Tractor How they can inspect farms ,insist on the highest welfare then turn a blind eye to the final moments of an animals life and suffering.I am not against any religious orders but as a Christian I do not want an animal to suffer a painful death .Nor do I want lies as to how my meat has arrived in the shop.

I'm pretty certain that no Red Tractor stock are killed without stunning.

Stun to stun ensures that animals are conscious when killed....according to the Halal Food Authority Slaughter procedure!
Having read a specification for halal sheep slaughter certification, their 'guidelines' do attempt to push down the amount of electricity that will flow through the animal's brain. However, the primary aim is that the animal is not dead when its throat is cut, not that it is conscious.

I don't have a problem with Halal if pre-stunned - which I realise most are

I agree entirely about the Jewish barstewards, happy to let the Muslims take the flak when they are as bad
Don’t be fooled by halal pre stunning. They use a recoverable stun because the animal has to be conscious when its throat is cut. If the animal is not conscious then the meat is Haram not Halal! Do you really want your animals to die in fear and pain because that is what halal and kosher is! A totally cruel barbaric and medieval slaughter that has no place in modern Britain! It needs to be banned!

We must continue to work to end the exemption for religious slaughter in this country. If Belgium can ban it so can we. This medieval practice has no place in our country!
