Sleep

Hi all,
I am a furniture designer that has been tasked with making a bedside lamp specifically for farmers, so I was interested in what you do to start and finish the day, e.g. waking up before your alarm, what time do you wake up (depending on if your a dairy farmer vs. agri), how you relax in the evenings and whether you try and avoid using lights in the room to avoid waking your partner or what you have on your bedside table currently (clock, books phone..). Basically anything to do with how you get to sleep or whether exercise / good diet contributes/ hinders this.

Thanks

Josh

Why do they make bedside lamps with a switch 2foot down the power lead? You can't reach it without scrabbling behind the bed Side table. Why is the other preferred location for a switch up the stalk near the bulb where you have to lift yourself out of bed to reach it?
Touch lamp for me if I could get a decent one and I have a charging pad for the mobile next to it (alarm, emergency calls etc).

I have poor sleep habits. Highly variable bedtime. Night terrors. I often wake at 5am but outside of harvest I'm not out of bed until half six. My bedside lamp is bobbins. An ace bedside lamp would have a downlight that could shine a light down the side of the bed so I could get up and out without disturbing the Mrs.

Exercise, diet, alcohol and stress. Mrs teslacoils has given up wine and finds getting to sleep tricky. Exercise helps sleep. Snacking in the evening hinders it. Stress ruins everything. I don't like to read for at least 30 mins before sleep.

A farmer specific bedside light, its no wonder the UK productivity figures are poor when designers are spending their time trying to invent solutions to solve none existent problem... Meanwhile Asia churn out simple but effective mass produced solutions to fulfill mass market problems.

I don't agree. It's always difficult to get up early or come in late without waking the management. I could do with a dimmer on mine so I could give up kicking the bedposts in the dark and then trying not to swear loudly. Agree with earlier post that an easy to find switch would be an improvement.

A lamp that can be turned away from my wife so I don't disturb her coming in late or going out early would be good.

I have an alarm clock that can go off with a light a few minutes before the alarm itself for gentle awakening though usually I turn that off and have a bird song dawn chorus type alarm tone that also awakens me gradually but it usually wakes her too. My alarm goes off just before 6am but many livestock farmers get up far earlier than that. 3.30am when I used to milk cows.

My wife likes to read for 10-30 minutes before sleep but I fall asleep quickly. Avoid screens & food before bed.

My old wind up alarm clock used to go 'click' 30 seconds before going off. Rarely did I fail to switch it off in that 30 second time gap.
I have a night light that plugs into a 13 amp socket for background light. Paper tape over it in layers until there is just enough light for my dark adjusted eyes to navigate round the room.

Does anyone use a lumie light? One that gradually lights up, supposedly simulating sunrise. Did consider one a couple of years ago as always found waking and getting up during the winter months hard going.

I have a toddler nowadays so not so much a problem !

I have one. The light woke me up before the alarm went off and the first week or so I’d lie there and wonder how much more sleep I’d lose before it was time to get up.

blue light filter glasses, correct (cool) room temperature and black out blinds are all very helpful i’ve found

I read a really good book about sleep last year that changed view on its priority

I’m quite sluggish in the mornings, come alive later in the day, but can get into early start routine at lambing time no bother when the pressure is on, where I find I have a strange talent of knowing the time to the minute before I open my eyes, does anyone else have this superpower?

Can’t really aid the op tho I’m afraid, sorry.

I Have a Phillips lamp (located away from my bed) that gradually brightens from an orange to bright for roughly 20 mins to wake me up. Its meant to work like the sleep apps and only wakes you when you're in a light sleep part of the cycle.

I've had it for 18 months and love it - summer and winter!

We have similar, only the old fashioned incandescent bulb that was in it failed so I of course replaced it with a cutting edge, up to the minute modern LED instead.

As a result, instead of waking us up gently over the course of about 20 minutes (stepless vario wakeup) we now have about 5 minutes of wake up, tops (6 stage powershift wake up).

Still functions ok though I guess. Easier on the eyes in the morning. The kids do the remainder of the shock to my nervous system.
