Slow payment

might be an idea to get the bills sent to the rightful owner in the future, our builder does it occasionally, has to be paid for sometime
Maybe a good idea as things are at the moment and if things in ag are going to continue to get tighter would reduce your exposure to some of the risk if there was only the cost of your labour outstanding.

Mate of mine puts a few sheds up. He wants money up front for the steel, customer pays for the concrete direct and then customer pays for the balance once the job is complete.

I don't want to do that. By asking for money up front I'm expecting the customer to trust me that he nice I've got his money I'm not going to disappear/ do a bad job. Trust should work both ways

I'm struggling to pay invoices just now due to one of my main customers automatically moving me to '120 day payments'! (Along with many other suppliers). It should be short term. I've spoken to the people I owe who are very understanding. They all say they are experiencing the same with others, yet are confident in things improving.

It's not a nice position to be in. I'm not concerned about my particular customer but I imagine there are many out there in similar positions with money due to then that they may never see. Let's hope things do improve and that people can get through to then.

I worded that wrongly. he doesn't ask for it 'up front'. He asks for payment for the steel (shed kit) upon delivery to farm but before erection. Nothing wrong with that IMO.

When we're on local jobs it's easier to do it through myself, usually. At the min it isn't
(n) your name getting sullied through no fault of your own(n)

:scratchhead:why should contractors ect, have to wait till framers get paid SFP/Subs before getting paid:rolleyes:, if sfp money is guaranteed then surely banks will stand good and everyone can be paid on time (y) or is it purely for interest free loans:shifty:

Had anyone else noticed that payments have gone seriously slow these last few months?

90% of the time I've never had a problem getting money, there's the people who are known for been slow payer and they l where slow payers but at the moment I'm not getting anything at all in.

Near enough every invoice I sent out since end of June/July is still outstanding, spoke to all the customers, they're all happy with the work just waiting on money coming in.

Is everyone else experiencing similar problems or is it just me?

We did have a shed company go bust on us, start up under a new name and go bust again! They wanted us to pay for stuff up front in the end, they never did finish the work and we still owe the final payment and still need to finish the shed!

Don't get yourself backed into a financial corner, take the week off the current job and drive round with the lads to all the sites collecting money for the jobs you've done. There is no excuse for not paying their bills by now, it should be them declaring bankruptcy, not you, but the farmer won't need to as he can live off his assets, he should extend his overdraft and pay his bills.

Edit: i've just seen on companies house that the same bloke has started up again!

Usually because the farmers needs his shed ready by Oct/Nov but knows damn well he can't pay for it until December but wings it. Not saying it's right but I'm sure it's what happens.

I try to invoice for steel upon delivery, but my invoices are done on a Monday so if it's delivered on a Tuesday I can have steel up before an invoice is raised

That's my point, why ain't he going to the bank so small firms can still be paid and let them eat, nowt stopping him financing a machine that is out of season :greedy:
