Slurry storage options

Considering options to expand our on farm slurry storage, we currently have around 400K gallon of storage, however to get a full winter we would be needing at least double what we have. Half of the current storage is a 30+ year old tower and the other is a slated tank.
What would the cost in a slurry lagoon against a tower with at least 750K gallon storage (our current tower is starting to show its age and could possibly be taken down in the near future).
Is looking for a 2nd hand tower a possible option or would if cause more problems than it's worth?

If I install a second-hand store, I have to certify that it is designed to last at least 20 years. Even if you are given the store, after all costs are taken into consideration, the maximum saving over new will be 20%. All sorts of problems can arise, and I have no intention of taking the risk.

A lined lagoon will be a quarter of the price of a tower.

Was told by friend that a lined lagoon for million gallon the liner would be about 20k. But beware know 2 men that have them and the gases in ground started to push liner up thru slurry into big bubble shaped things. 1 o them went round his at very bottom and cut it and trailed stuf on floor out way digger. Still looks ok But ssshh dont tel dard/niea lol

Yes, I have heard of more than one liner floating up.

Ground water can also push them up,on the continent they use ground water drains under the liner.

I also know of one locally with them under the liner, siting the lagoon is the key.

EA regulations stipulate that any watercourse, which includes drains, must be sited at least 10 metres from any store.
I like the gas escape idea!

Its coming in that slurry stores have to be roofed or maybe it’s in but how can a lagoon get away with it? Are they planning to ban lagoons?

Years ago when we dug out for our concrete pit , after a particularly bad storm , the excavated pit had a huge spring in it . What to do? Well in went drainage stone and pipes, to this day after heavy rain a 6” osma runs more than half full after rain. The EA cannot have any faith in the integrity of a store if they stipulated this. A mate with a large lined lagoon has french drains in the base to take the ground water away.

I have no brief to explain or understand EA thinking.

Possibly have to have floating covers? some lagoons are impossible to roof due to width.

Has anyone put a cover on that they can stir beneath?
I know of one which is very impressive, have walked on it but wouldn’t be in a hurry to do it often, the idea seems good and I was impressed. On the other hand I don’t think he ever stirred it when we went to spread his slurry ?

I had a floating cover back in 2006,didn't think we needed a stirrer, took the cover off when the crust was near 6' deep.
