a neighbours 2000 gal tanker on big recessed wheelers has snapped the axle just behind the hub , it's a heavy duty ADR axle which was extra when it was new , the tanker is out of warranty but the owner thinks they should still stand over it as he says axles shouldn't brake , any one have similar problems with tanker axles.

When you say heavy duty what size do you mean?
How old is the tanker?
And how often does the owner do 50k over rough roads with it?

I know of two that done it, but the
Axles were 90mm square. They now have 100mm square which should be a lot stronger. Am I right in thinking that 100mm square is a quarter stronger? 90 x 90 equals 8100 mm, 100 x 100 equals 10000? Is that how it works though o_O

Not 100% sure how it works, but I'd imagine it would be exponential, quite possibly could be at least twice as strong.
I wonder if these axles were ever meant to have such large diameter wheels on them? I know commercial axles were never designed to have anything other than super singles.

I think those tankers are a accident waiting to happen. Seen a 3000 gallon single wheel one hopping along today and I can't see how it will last. It was nearly hopping off the road when empty and not much better when full

When buying new there was the option of a heavier axle the same as was being used in bigger tankers like the 2400 or 2600 , the tanker is about 8 yrs old . Still on origionial tyres . It wouldn't be doing a lot of road work .

had this happen to ours today, fortunately tanker was empty not going very fast down a lane, I dread to think what would have happened if he was loaded going along the main road. Tanker is five years old, well used, but well maintained, whilst I do not expect any help I will be informing Hi spec as this should not be happening.

Is adr chineese? So what axle is betr? Manufactures shouldnt be fittin axles that wont stick it. They should be fittin axles that will do 50k at the tankers weight. Bearin in mind you cannot overload a tanker, total impossibility. If sum1 ends up gettin killed by a axle breakin the manufacturer and all thier design team should be givin life sentences cause this is just not on when makin road travelin equipment
