Not sure they have thought it through very well, much as the idiots in the WAG haven't with their attempt now in the pipeline. I can see HRA challenges to both, but the ECHR is very PC, so they are not likely to succeed.

We know from polls that both the Scottish and Welsh publics are against these bans, but the self-important third-raters know best, so they tell us... yet more examples of the failure of devolution. :(

Against the ban.

Looking at the photo in the article, my first reaction was, if that child hasn't grasped the concept of discipline by now, it's going to be tough going for them. Needs to happen a lot younger.

My wife is a teacher, qualified in secondary, but has taught some primary too. We have three kids ages 10, 8 and 4. They have all been on the end of proportionate smacking. Can't remember when the 8 and 10 were last smacked, and sincerely hope it's never thought necessary again. The 4 is still on the receiving end of a bit. But she's getting there.

Missus says there's a clear gap in parental discipline in many kids, and she is left to clean up the mess when it's already too late. This is a poor outcome, not only for that child who's life prospects are greatly affected, but also for the well-disciplined children who's class has been disrupted. One line they trotted out in a city school where she taught was 'miss. I know my rights.'. :rolleyes:. It shouldn't be her job to do a neglectful parent's dirty work for them.

We have never used it in anger, or with significant retrospect. It's never a substitute for helping a child to understand where it's going wrong. But it's a tool in the box when you need to get their attention, and they clearly haven't been listening. In most cases I've seen what's happening, and have given fair warning that, if it continues, they should expect to feel my hand. Also warn that if a similar trespass occurs again, what they should expect. I think that's pretty fair. At the end of the day, it is done primarily for the child's benefit. At some point in the near future, I would hope the 4 will begin to think ahead about the consequences of her actions before she goes through with them. And that's really what I want to get through to her. When she gets a bit bigger, she will gradually be replacing the consequence of parental sanctions with real life consequences. I hope.

Our society is far to strong on rights, and far too light on responsibilities.

All the above is backed up by my own experience in the Courts; there is a clear difference in the relative numbers that appear between:

a) those that had discipline at home and school;

b) those that had discipline at home;

c) those that had no discipline.

You can guess which way the relative number of appearances in Court increases... :( :banghead:

since when has what the public think counted for much

A better question is: since when has it not counted for much?

Personally Smacking doesn’t work. When I was young it wasn’t a deterrent the punishment was over in an instant and i got on as nothing had happened. Then I went to school if someone did something wrong or annoyed me I’d start fighting with them!

Far better to confiscate a toy or ban them from watching tv etc.

Smacking shows a loss of control. If you’ve lost control or are frustrated, annoyed you aren’t in right frame of mind to be smacking a child.
