@Clever Dic has more experience than most, although I suspect he’s quite busy right now.
It’s not ideal time of year to buy, I suspect - too late for this season and too early for next. Worth giving it a couple of months until harvest 2019 dust settles and then asking around the heavy users?
A secondhand Welger will be better than a new anything else. And probably more expensive to buy, but cheaper in the long run.
We've had three Welgers in over 40 years. An AP61 bought new and run for about 30 years. A secondhand AP730 which did 5 years, but wasn't big enough and a new AP830 which has done 9 years. All machines have run without a single major breakdown and fairly minimal seasonal maintenance. The only harvest machine we don't need to worry about.
A big baler now takes the bulk of the harvest work, but up to 2015 we were baling approximately 40,000 conventional straw bales a year.
welger is probably the best IF you have the work for it, we changed our NH570 that was 14 years old for another one about four/five years ago, it goes very well and can handle a big swath behind a 6 metre rake without issues and as we sell to the horse market by the bale rather than by the tonne the bigger bale that a welger makes would be a disadvantage to us as they A wouldnt want to pay more per bale for the larger bale and B would complain they are too heavy
Are the Hesston in line balers still made? They were sold as MF as well, they were never popular second hand so a cheap buy and they had a good capacity
The JD 459 is a good machine too, I opted to not have a Welgar partly on price but mainly because of the bale shape, the bales are wider and not so deep and don't fit in my 56 bale squeezer so well as an 'imperial' bale shape.
It is a myth that the Welgar bales are heavier, depends on the settings of the press, my JD will make a bale that is the same weight as a Welgar bale.
If you want output - used Welger 830 ( they don’t make them anymore ) will literally eat anything. Currently sat pumping 650-700 an hour out of mine. It’s a myth about inconsistent bale length. If you have a good rake man with no lumps.
Nicest looking bale John Deere 459
Easiest to get round but I hated the one I had ( forever breaking stuffer sheer bolts and a pain to unblock )
Massey in-line
Have run all of the above putting 25-35k bales a year. If I had to go and buy a new one tomorrow it would be a JD
Brand spanking JD 459 in Ripon Farm Services on tuesday looked a fair tool. Fitter said they usually sold 1 a year.
Also usually got 1 call out a year to a conventional baler - usually knotter related
Well I didn't dream the bale length thing, and I am talking about 3 various Welger balers over the years, baling nice even swaths of straw. I accept fully that there are operators and steering wheel attendants, but my experience was with decent operators.
I am currently playing with a new to me NH 378, it's alright ish, but the ram stroke is noisy for no obvious reason, any pointers anyone, please, is there a "thing" with them other than usual maintenance?
