Golf circa 1998. 1.9tdi 110bhp will do near 60mpg if you are very careful. We’ve had 4 of them and as long as they are serviced the only repeated issue with all of them was a faulty relay which drops all power.

They’re just getting too old now. I’ve had a 2001 one from 2005, it’s passed 250k. Two clutches and dual mass flywheels, one S/H gearbox, turbo, about three sets of wishbones and rear axle bushes and it eats anti roll bar links and track rid ends! It’s been welded for MOT for first time this year but is cheap to run, everyone breaks them now so plenty S/H parts and ebay is full of replacement parts. Just fitted two £10.99 handbrake cables on it tonight!! It’s a cheap car for me but it’s no good if you can’t do the repairs yourself. As an example the gearbox was £50 and took a Sunday morning to throw it on. Garage repair would of been what, £500?.

Possibly they made them too well!!! Saying that the Audi 80/A4 which gave them most of the mechanicals were damm good cars aswell. I won’t be buying another Golf as their prices are now just too high, paying for the Golf name. Might aswell buy same Car with the four rings on the front or a younger, better equipped model with a Skoda badge!!!

We liked our Fabia so much, we bought a 2001 Octavia 1.9 estate for a run around for Mrs Fred. That has been just as good and she did 20,000 miles in it last year without any real issues,

Video on Utube of a 1.9 Octavia that mechanics ripped all apart after nearly (CORRECTED) 431,000 miles clocked & sorted all worn bits & rep interior trim from a VRS etc
plus resprayed it. Engine was in very good order tho that was the impressive part.
Poss Skoda's finest Car ever id say.

Remember the last of the Vauxhall Cavaliers esp the 1.7 TDI models the IZUZU engined one.
Bomb proof totally yes they were sluggish off the mark but what a motorway cruiser & some.
Dad had two of them here, last was i think clocked 125,000 miles on sold to buy the Vitara which i still have to this day.
But so cheap to run. You rarely change exhaust parts on diesels also, nothing on a single diesel car here in last 24years across 5 cars
used to change pipes on all petrol cars before that, every 2/3 years
This Vitara is all original its 15.4yr old now
The Mk1 Seat Leon i had, had no exhaust parts in 10years from new.

What on earth makes you think VW group are superior?
That mileage is nothing.....how about a 1 million mile Mondeo......https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...-Holmes-clocks-1m-miles-16-year-old-Ford.html

When we were looking for a car, the local mechanic told me to try an Octavia that he had in for a service. It had done 450,000 miles in about 6 years as a taxi. Everything worked as it should and it drove really well just the seat was a bit tired.

Ive never said anything about being superior have i?
The Skoda name/image is of the underdog tho thats what its about here.
The germans just have a way with engineering that surpasses a fair whack of the rest in all sectors
The Seat & Skoda brands have come on massively because of there ownership.

Whats left in thats made in the UK
Vauxhall there days are numbered. once was a good car tho.
Honda very reliable i wont knock them for that but like Nissan there styling is way off the mark.
JLR where do we start there.... no much for modern farming anymore thats anywhere near affordable.
Unless ya got 5000ac farm behind ya & not many of us have that luxury
Mini oh aye who owns them again (The Germans) decent enuff i guess but over priced & i think its a Very FAT version of its Original concept now.
Ford there gone to europe & they might have some of the best selling cars over the last 30 years but i wouldnt have a single one even if you gave me it.
I know we have various trusted sports car brands in the uk & i guess they have there place
but Rich mans play toys again not much relevance to Mr ave UK Farmer.

have i missed any out?

I have had a couple of mates have had electronic problems with Fords (including the Focus diesel estate that cut out on the Smart section of the M3). Their experiences mirror mine with the Disco, where every journey, you are on edge waiting for a new light to come on. The Skodas have always given us the feeling that we are going to get where we intended.
