Yes, you are correct. We have worked in most of these places and are close to Inverness. Yes some of the the work is specialist. Why would you put a fastrac and empty dumper on a lorry which will cost double?

For a one-off, I probably wouldn’t. For a regular thing, I’d probably have a word with GF Job, head up myself in the car and have the ability to drive home at night.

H’mm, funny quote.. we travel a radius of at least 100 miles for contract work so slow travel is not much use. The fendt’s have all the toys more than likely but the speed from 20 years ago. I bet other makes travel faster now. 25 years ago 100hp was a powerful tractor before modern transmission’s sapped half the power!

Only Fastracs and Unimogs are legal at over 40kph. If you’re operating 100miles from base you should have a tacho and restricted O licence as well I believe.

Looking for a 100hp or thereabouts, light and nimble but with all the features found on the bigger models, e.g. Front susp, cab sus, decent gearbox, a/c, loader, decent cab etc

Is it possible to find one without getting too heavy and big !

Looked at JD5100r and claas 420 thus far..
I have a John Deere 6110rc with John Deere loader 1970 hours,TLS,3 spools, air con,air seat,2015 owned from new or a 65 plate same spec 1000 hours but only selling one

So is there a restriction on how far from base a farming/forestry contractor can run?

Think it depends on what work you’re doing. If you’re hauling goods more than 15miles from your home base then you need an O licence. If you’re an NAAC member Mike Sumner would give you a definitive answer.

Yes,neighbour has a JD5100r with that gearbox and absolutely hates it,ridiculous that you have to turn off the brake to clutch every time you start it,should be the other way round. On these small tractors you don't want too fancy a gearbox cos they take away too much power when youre only starting with 100hp.Apparantly Deere are putting a powerquad gearbox in the 5100M range from next year, much better suited for a basic loader tractor.
If that's the case you have made my day! !
I didn't like the gearbox in the 100r much either .. in theory the claas has the same box (4 in 4 ) but it's much better executed in the claas, it seems to shift quicker and skip gears if needed...

My biggest annoyance with the Deere though was the lack of a push out hitch... apparently it's because it's a utility tractor and they are trying to keep the costs down... However they still managed to put an overcomplicated gearbox on it !! Give me the old powerquad any day !!!

Im pretty sure you can have a push back hitch on a 5r,dealer fabricated rather than direct from Deere tho.In comparison to the 6000 series they've never really got the 5000s right IMO.

Just had a arion440 on demo, I really liked it! It's winning so far.. getting a price on a 420, as it's lighter..
Get a choice of hitch push back chain type or standard drommone .I thought I would hate the hitch working on spool with no lift rods for pick-up hitch .But I'm quite liking it now .

Yes, I've never liked the look of those much but I can see the advantages...

What are they like if you need to push the hook into to soil a bit to get under the ring of the trailer??

I remember the old swing out hitches from the 90's and they were terrible if you needed to push on them... they'd just swing back !

Tbh so far just make sure have block under drawbar .I've never found it to successful trying to get under a sunk hitch even with a pushback !
