Looking at price of used 4x4 pickups seem to be getting expensive. For what you pay they don't seem to last. Rust or engine issue. Does anyone use 7.5 ton lorries instead of 4x4s for general farm work. They seem to be a lot cheaper. Maybe better for towing also

I used to have one to move hay and straw between farms. Not much good in a soft field but cheaper to run loads back and forth with. Keep in mind you’ll have to have an inspection every certain number of miles or 12 weeks which ever comes soonest. If still the same as 2o years ago. I took it for a full mot at the ministry testing station. Was cheaper than an half an hour at a dealers. Unbiased report and no need for an annual mot as it was constantly getting a new one. Given a list of fails that you can fix yourself or give to a repair man. You’ll be on a tachometer too.

Are you in the UK aleary5a? If so the purchase cost will be less but the running cost a lot higher. Operators licence, saftey checks and you may also not even be qualified to drive one depending on your licence. Do not underestimate the cost of advertizing your Operators licence application in the local press, there as so few local papers that the ones which are left are in a position to insist that you do it on their terms (large costly advert)

If you could find a 7.5t DAF/Iveco hook loader it would be some weapon for farm use.. Even a HINO if you must but the gear/body on the back of a HINO is worth more than the actual lorry part.

There will be set up costs but you can just run a restricted o license for farm use

I may be wrong but AFAIK you don't need an O license if you are only hauling your own goods, or a restricted O license at most.

Used to have lads hauling away from here bending the rules of it by getting the docket made out in their name so it was "their own goods" if stopped.

My C1 licence allows up to 8.25 tonnes vehicle and trailer. don't think tacho required for transport of your own goods.

Buy a second hand Hilux and get someone to professionally clean, prepare and coat the underside of the thing properly. It will last fine once that is done.

In essence Trucks in UK can’t and shouldn’t fail MOT, they must be up to standard every day of the year. An MOT fail can bring DVSA to your door for full inspection of everything

We ran a couple of rigids that failed the brake test a few times (brakes were fine) and that was flagged up and brought them to our door. They said " do it again and you will lose your operators license".
Sent them for a brake test before every MOT after that, just some weight on the back was all they needed.

Remember it's the 8.25 tonne less the towing vehicle gross plated weight, leaving gross trailer weight,
Example, on a 107 restriction, a lorry with a plated weight of 7.5 tonne, you can only pull a trailer with a gross of 750,kg even if the lorry is empty

Have licence for artics so ok on that side. It's just the cost of the pickups and how long they last before chassis is knackered or engine gives bother made me think about this currently running a d40 navara. Will a 7.5 toner be a lot harder on fuel than a pickup I would imagine that they will be better towing as well. Was thinking of an old ford cargo that has simple wiring and no adblue. It would be a good winter project restoring one and would be handy once finished

Had a single cab hilux 2005. Good handy truck. Kept it all well waxoyled and looked after it. Didn't seem to make much difference in how long it lasted the rust got it in no time
