Err, arent Hilux / Navara / Ranger etc small utes ?
Certainly compared to 70 Series Landcruisers or F - Series Fords etc

The old Subaru Brumby, while very popular here in the day, wasn’t really big enough to carry much more than your water bottle & tucker box in the back

our roads would kill something like a Caddy or little Fiat, especially with a few hundred kilos of toolboxes & other essential crap in the back

They aren't small utes to us. We used to have even smaller car derived pick-ups eg, the mini,Morris Minor,Morris Marina/Ital,VW Caddy(Golf based before it became a van here),Skoda Felicia,Ford P100(Cortina/ Sierra) and the odd Subaru something or other.None of that size anymore.
Your forgettin the old peugeot 504

err, dunno about UK Hiluxes, but fuel consumption has improved on them here with each model & my 2014 3.0 is about the same size as my old 1980’s 2.4D & current model 2.8. They are all pretty much the same size when parked next to each other 🤷‍♂️

Used to cost a bit over $100 to fill my HZJ75 when I bought it new, now costs about $250, fuel has gone up a lot since then
