That looks as if it was inspired by the Chevvy el Camino. It seemed to be popular with the drug dealer types when we were in the US in the 1980s.

If you really don't value your life too highly we have a whole class of cars here called "sans permis" which literally means "without a licence". The idea is you can drive one without a licence even if you have lost your proper licence for whatever reason. The pick up version is popular with the farming community and can often be seen weaving down the local roads shortly after "l'heure de wine o'clock". They are best described as death traps attached to lawn mower engines.

Rather like the old Defenders then?

Just looking at the el Camino which it says is a 1970, the front end looks just like those big Vauxhall Ventora/VX4'90s that you used to see in the late 70s. I don't think they lasted long in before succumbing to rust.

These seem good value compared to a gator etc, also good fuel economy.

Ridiculous, not much better than my 26 old Landcruiser.
Why so? I’m all for large fuel tanks, even on relatively frugal vehicles. Same goes for tractors which I always aimed for a good 10 hours absolutely flat out, full power, between the need to refill. With cars/pickups, a 600 mile range while driving long distance is my target. Never have achieved it with a pickup but then again never actually travel far from home with it.
£90 is only 60 litres at today’s pump price. That is only 13 gallons, which is also just under the size of my Honda CR-V’s fuel tank. Not at all big and considering the size and duty cycle of a modern pickup I would wish for about an 80 litre tank, ideally nearer 100 litres.

The ridiculous part is the cost of fuel per litre, not the size of the fuel tank or the pickup’s fuel consumption. A 100 litre fuel tank will cost the best part of £150 to refill from near empty in today’s market. The car might still achieve 35mpg though, like a current Audi Q7, giving a comfortable 700 mile range.

My father bought a Mini pickup while I was off working elsewhere. God knows what made him do it. It was old and hand painted and was absolute crap in every way possible. We changed it in probably 1978 for a Subaru pickup which was in a different league. Very thirsty and not particularly reliable though. That lasted, I think, until 1984 when I bought the LR110 Hi-Cap pickup which did sterling service for 22 years. Would never consider a smaller pickup than the 110 long wheelbase Land Rover. Current pickups are mostly around 130” wheelbase and double cab of course, which is probably why the ‘traditional’ Land Rover short wheelbase [88 or 92”] people think that they are ‘big’. Personally a king cab [cab and a half] would suite me fine, as my first Ford Ranger was, but they don’t tend to hold their value as well as double cab pickups. I have been surprised by how little I miss the lost extra foot bed length of my current double cab pickup compared to the 110 and shorter cab previous Ranger.
Have you still got the 110 hi cap ?

My 4.2 landcruiser only did 23-24 mpg and much less when towing, the 19 reg hilux does about 25 including towing with eco button.
Mine does 23-24, Hilux does broadly the same once the odo error is accounted for. Odo is bang on accurate on my LC with 285/75/16, my Hilux odo is 12% out so if it says 25 it's actually doing 22. LC uses less than the Hilux when towing. Modern and much lighter trucks should be doing much better imo.

Probably never came to the UK but Dacia Logan pick ups are popular in France. This was probably helped by the new price of about 9k euros plus vat. I am told they make a Dacia Duster pick up as well for Eastern Europe but not yet available here.

Those Logan pickups are great, ran one in Ukraine, $10k new
