For stuffs like that, you need a shelf (or six) in the workshop full of "useful" things like that old steering column UJ you replaced years ago because it was notchy.

Our grass seed box uses springs as UJs on the PTO shaft. Never failed….. yet.

Or a suitably sized piece of hydraulic hose slipped over shafts with a jubilee clip to hold in place

I can usually lay my hands on a horded item quite quickly, so long as no one has tried to tidy the workshop. Trying to sort and organise the place just seems to ruin the mental filing system.

I found the bit of scrap steering column just fine.

I'm currently looking for a curly orange airline, that I'm sure is in the workshop, but I cannot find it despite being bright orange.

And it's not a big workshop...

If they'll cope with all the steering corrections you need to keep a defender straight then they'll outlast a corn drill!

Just so long as it's not one of the more spurious pattern parts. Some of the non oem land rover parts seem like they had scrapped the cost saving barrel so hard that the bottom had fallen out.
