Smaller towing vehicle

All these crossovers mentioned, including the larger ones like Honda C-RV and RAV4 may be rated to tow 2.5 tons but their drivetrains are car based and small car based at that. 2.5 tons behind then and starting off up hill is just too much for them in my opinion. On easy going, fine, but there may come a time where they are found wanting and clutches will smoke and give up the ghost.
However, for commuting and the occasional flat road towing, they should be fine.

at risk of repeating, if you need a car like performance suv, the antara is the absolute top one for value for money, nothing comes within shouting distance

permanent 4x4 2 litre diesel , good economy , great to drive, comfy 5 seater, good visibility. after 50 miles it was like a comfy pair of shoes and fitted like a glove, and best of all, no money to buy.
buy a good one, drive it for a year and scrap it, still be cheaper than owning a LR product of bthe same age, but will last ten years if you forget to change it, if you was given a brand new disco the antara would still be cheaper and better, just not got the bragging rights that spending £40000 gives you

Not quite once the floor etc gone on shogun it’s f’d . I’d have one but it’s horses for courses between them. Defender keeps going up in price where as my brothers shogun keeps rotting away and losing money. His garage told him to get rid ASAP and it’s a year younger than Defender.

Hmm sounds nearly but not quite as good as a Subaru Forester.

£5k will buy one that will last for years.

Only problem is everyone will think you are either landed gentry or a pikey hare courser

Toyota, you won't go wrong. Still be running long after the rest and died. The American forums are all singing about Toyota 4x4s. They just work.
Whilst Toyota's large 4x4 are an impressive capable machine, their small SUV offerings are much more average, and rust merrily like many others.
My inlaws have run them for many years, and so far I am not convinced of any significant superiority over the competition.

I looked in to the SWB land cruiser it’s only available in manual this put me off a bit . I’ve no doubt it’ll be a good motor.

:scratchhead: .Mmmm.

That's odd. Mine is 18 years old, and nothing's fallen off yet. But let's not go there.

Using the example given earlier, what is a 2010 Merc ML like for upkeep? Air bags or coil sprung?

On autotrader, I valued my current tidy towing vehicle at £4k. Nissan xtrail, 2008 newer shape, auto, 125k. I was surprised to say the least that an ML of the same age and miles was only worth £2k more. To think that an ML could have been probably close on 15-20k more expensive when new. Goes to show just how catastrophically bad the depreciation is.

55plate RAV4 here, 95,000miles on clock. Owned it for 5 1/2 years so far. She's sound, less rust underneath than many bigger 4x4's that I've seen!! Is capable enough off road for a small SUV on HT (road) tyres, just don't be an idiot and go where the Defender on AT's will

Hmmm, d4d ait so hot to own, neither gearbox or engine, both duff after 70000

Rubbish.

The older models (5-speed) losses 5th gear, but catch it early and £250 puts it right (unless you go to Toyota then it's thousands). It's a common Toyota fault and parts are readily available. The engines are good, unless abused/neglected.
