Smart 'phone tag reading...?

Being clockwork I'm not up to date on these sort of things so... is there a 'phone that will also read tags?

I've a done a quick search and found nothing, but it seems an obvious and useful thing - have I missed it?

It is because Livestock RFID tags work on a particular frequency of 134.2 kHz. As there is only a tiny demand (agriculture is a niche market compared to the national and global consumer markets) for this functionality to be included in mobile phones, companies simply don't see it as profitable to include.

Hmm... assuming the tags used across the world are on the same frequency, it's fair to say that, globally, there should be a decent sized market. I guess the dedicated scanners will keep falling in price.

Hmm, my pig tag reader will read the sheep and cattle tags but not come up with the right number - that is another £5 - 600 to spend then.....

If the phone companies themselves don’t do them I can’t see why they can’t make a small device that plugs into the bottom of the phone so that you can read tags with it - a lot like plugging a charging lead or headphones in.

I bought a few reader circuit boards and antennae from Priority1 Design in Australia. They worked perfectly and output the reading over a serial connection.

Had hoped to use it as part of an automated feeder but never found the time to do the programming.

Our dog chip scanner reads sheep tags - about £40
But does it say the number that is on the tag? Some tag companies will supply a translation page so that you can interpret, so I read on here anyway. My pig tag reader will read a 13 figure electronic number but none of it corresponds to the number written on the sheep or calf tag.

Don't use it for the sheep but when I tried some odd tags that were lying on my desk one day it gave me the correct numbers but not sure if it missed the first digit although that wasn't an issue to identify what tags I checked. Will have to charge it up and try it again

@Smudge was trying to make a tag reader out of a piece of pipe and some electronic stuff he'd bought on the internet back in the summer. Don't know how he got on.

Slight hiccup on that front

Bought a small laptop that could be charged from a 12v usb socket, couldn't get Linux to run properly then one day the battery overheated. Been too busy with work lately to carry on. If I get it working I'll post up all the details on here.

cheapest one we supply is the agrident APR250 - £385. High quality LED screen, inbuilt recording for all the common sheep events, bluetooth driver built in to send lists of tags to pocket Bluetooth printer, free software to download events to PC, download sheep groups to PC and print, long life lithium battery, magnetic sealed connector for usb lead to preven water getting in .... Reads both cattle and sheep tags. Cattle eid tags get sent into phone app - phone holding bracket available so phone can be clipped onto the reader to make it one handed operation ...

Clockwork! Bloody modernists, if it won't respond to a bloody good thump with a mammoth's femur then what's the point?
