I'm quite overwhelmed by the replies here . Thank to all . So can I be really demanding and ask another related question . I've always swapped Samsung for Samsung , I have a usb cable to join old and new together , and a little program that facilitates file transfer between the two . If I went for the A series Samsung , presumably the same would apply . But would it be more difficult to transfer between a Moto and a Samsung? Oh , and one more , is it worth waiting for a G5 service and handset ?

I would presume but do not know for certain that if you have a Google account, which is basically a Gmail address, and that you have automatic backup to the GoogleDrive, then everything will be transferred automatically from the Google Drive Cloud when you register your account on the new phone. Even if you have Samsung's proprietary system and are registered to that, there is nothing stopping you also registering an account with Google as well and backing your phone up to that as well or instead of Samsung's.
Personally I prefer Android as near as native as possible, but that's just me.

Your existing SIM should work fine just by swapping them over with no need to talk to the system provider. I've had to cut SIMs down to size with a scissors before now to fit new phones and have never had a problem.

If you are near a large town it might be worth getting a 5G enabled phone, but you will need a 5G mast near you and a new 5G SIM to make use of it. With a good 4G signal, which is more likely than the shorter range 5G signal out in the countryside, you have enough speed most of the time to stream 1080P HD movies if not 2160p 4K ultra HD, so 5G will not be a priority for most people for the next decade or so.

Thanks again for the input . I think I won't bother with 5G - I'm ever an optimist but perhaps 10 years ahead is pushing my luck ? I'm not that bothered about the money - £100 or so difference , so I would feel happier perhaps with another Samsung - A series , despite the Moto looking quite appealing . Samsung it is then !

Samsung batteries have not got the best reputation for longevity but otherwise if that is what you fancy and it certainly won't break the bank and you won't lose much of anything compared with a Samsung phone five times more expensive, buy it and enjoy. If you happen to break it, literally, then you can buy another new one and still have spent less than half what an S21 would have cost. They will do exactly the same job.

It's all sorted now , a MOTO ! coming tomorrow , so I'll let you know how I cope . As Cowabunga says , if it all goes tips -up you haven't lost a lot and it's all to gain . £100 plus rather than nearly a thousand . I've always bought the "older" flagship Samsung a day or two after they've released the newer one , so we'll see how different marque behaves

Had 5-6 Moto phones myself, if not more... Only had one problem unit, and sent back to Amazon after 8-9 months. My lad has had many over the past few years as he tends to mullah them quickly, with his army workload!! Cheap and cheerful to replace and as the Duck says, a doddle to upgrade with Google. Just make sure your phone settings back up apps and data. Hell, even Herself has one now and loves it...

A Moto phone will not come with the usual pile of Samsung apps that few if anyone use, which is a huge bonus. :)

Daughter 2 had a very snazzy Samsung and moved to a Moto G after a problem and Samsung would not help with a 10 month old phone after the supplier went tits up. One her 2nd Moto now as just bought another...

Here's a review of the G9 Play. The G8 Play will be very very similar. The Power versions have a much bigger battery. The G8 Power currently sells for around £100 including VAT which is an absolute bargain. It is a big phone though and whichever version you have ordered you do need at least a condom case for it. That's a clear soft plastic case if you aren't cognisant with the hip lingo.

Yes . ordered both at the same time but case came today , phone tomorrow ! Says they'll e mail me a "code" tomorrow , that I have to quote to the driver before he'll let me have it . Hi-tech ? Or over cooking it a bit ?

Yes ! it came OK . Amazon sent me an e mail with a code that I had to quote to the driver , you might have thought he was transporting the crown jewels to Fort Knox with that rigmarole . Full instructions for transferring Samsung to Moto - wirelessly too . Just having a few teething problems though . All thedata was transferred AKAIK no problem at all and the home screen came up with the apps . I didn't set the fingerprint unlock , but I set a numeric one . The screen comes up with a closed lock and a message to say "unlock for all features and data ". and also "moto actions is active " Trouble is that despite swiping up down sideways etc. and tapping the lock , there doesn't seem to be anywhere to enter the numeric unlock code . I called the phone from my landline and I got an "accept or decline " message but no ring tone . So -o- it's all on going . I'm just about to access moto help line , and see if they have a solution .

When I turn off or reboot my MotoG7+ I get that message.
I just swipe up from the bottom and it asks for my numerical code, the 'moto actions' thing doesn't appear again unless you restart or switch off.

EDIT - I can swipe UP from almost anywhere to reveal the unlock screen

Berluddy Ell . I thought that was to make an emergency call . I thought the fire brigade or the police/ ambulance would be on blues and twos up the lane . Just done it , and it's all systems go . Thanks muchly.
BTW it's a MOTO G10 and it is dual sim and the second, bigger sim slot takes an SD card .

Set your fingerprint reader using thumb and two fingers of both hands. Also set up your Google Pay wallet with as many of your credit cards as possible. Also your banking app.
Using fingerprint verification is so much more convenient for paying for goods and services than a passcode, especially when stretching out of a car window to pay for your Big Mac. [don't ask how I know, It certainly wasn't through Googleing]

I find fingerprint security to be just as useful and fast as face recognition but in different situations. Take some time and set them both up and don't forget your security code either as despite the other methods the phone might insist on you entering the code for security reasons from time to time.

This video will probably give you some ideas of the functions available on your new phone.
