smartphone locked

I see there's an offer on S10 smartphones but they are locked to either vodafone or EE . Is this permanent , or could one be changed on to giff gaff if necessary ? My S9 is just looking a bit weary . I'm not worried about the better camera - I'm happy with the one on S9 , so would it be a good idea to change - or is there a better alternative ?

I used to work at O2. Normally if you call the provider the phone is locked to you can get it unlocked. Not sure if the person calling needs to be the original owner though to try and stop thefts etc. Are you looing to buy second hand or from EE or Vodaphone direct?

Not knowing what an S10 is, but when phones are network locked it is always best to ask the network to unlock them, rather than A.N. Other as it works out more reliable.
Whether Voda or EE will do this for free immediately, I know not

Some providers won't let you unlock for 12 months. It could all have changed now though, its been 3 or 4 years since I worked in a phone shop

second hand from "Music Magpie " guaranteed , refurb , "Good" condition , factory re set . Just a bit doubtful of Music Magpie , never having dealt with them , but they come with 12 months warranty , but perhaps their good might not be the same as mine ! Just checked back - doesn't matter now , the deal expired as I searched . Another time perhaps !

As above - Music magpie , but as I said , it doesn't matter now the deal expired just as I was checking . I first saw it on "Hot UK Deals" site . They still have deals on i phones though . Check it on the "hotukdeals" site , but I have no experience of either music magpie or any of the others , so I can neither recommend nor distrust any of them .

You can get a new 128GB Samsung A51 for just over £200+VAT.
Or a Motorola G8 Power Lite with a battery that will last for three days and plenty of storage… 65GB. All for less than £100 including VAT at Argos.

Why buy used and locked of unknown provenance when you could buy that Moto or another G8 model for around £100+VAT?

My wife had a clear out of stuff at the start of the year, sold all my old phones which have filtered down through the family and are finished with now, we’re all on Vodafone so never been a problem as most if not all were locked, she got them all unlocked so it’s definitely possible, I think you make a phone call with the imei number, (or something like that.)

Thank you all for your replies - most helpful . I've only ever had the Galaxy "S" series , bought new ,and no experience of others , so the replies I've had make a lot of sense . I am rather leaning towards another Samsung , but the A 51 As suggested by Cowabunga . I don't really need a fancy camera , it mostly gets used to photograph cattle passport numbers so that I have a record for submitting them to BCMS - not really a demanding job . And the phone itself , I use as a portable computer to access the internet . So , as long as it's reasonably fast , and with decent memory I'd be happy . This is why I've usually bought a dual SIM phone so that I can put a memory card in the spare SIM port . .

I suspect your wording isn't quite right as SD cards won't fit in sim slots but many phones have slots for SD cards as well as sim slots.
I'm not sure that you are right about that . I've always had double sim card phones , and true enough they have 2 different sizes of slot , but I've always fitted an SD card in one of them - not sure whether it's the bigger or smaller slot , it's a time since I did it , but whichever , that's what I've done with no problems . The "slides" are quite fragile so I won't be taking one out to look , but I stand to be corrected on the above .

Some of the latest phones do have longer dual trays where the second 'bed' can either be a second SIM or an SD card at the user's choice. This seems to be increasingly common, although still a minority have this feature.

I'm sure I've read that there's new rules coming in saying that phones can't be locked to a network, not that it helps with a used phone now.

If I drive into town I'll pass 3 shops advertising laptop repairs and phone unlocking while you wait on the windows. And in the local shopping complex there's two more in the central aisle selling unlocking along with chargers and phone covers, been there a few years so nearly sure it must work or they wouldn't still be in business.

I can't understand anyone buying any phone locked to a network. I don't believe I've had one locked in the last 20 years.

I bought my daughter an A51 and she thinks it is great. It was her choice I hasten to add, after we looked at several budget and mid-range models. She went from an iPhone to it and thinks it quite superior. Although it is a phone used for our business, she uses it mostly for private calls so I let her sort the monthly network charge from her private income.

Did the same with my brother and his is used 99.9% for the business. We chose a Motorola for him which was cheaper than the Samsung and he thinks it is great. He has learnt a lot from watching farming related YouTube videos to see different ways of doing things. His replaced a budget Nokia phone. The latest Indian based Nokia not the old Scandinavian phones. It was an unreliable heap and didn't last 18 months.
