Updated to a new phones, wife and myself , didn't want or need anything fancy, so bought Moto G 4, moving from original Moto G.
After a few hours of Motorola migrate and various updates, which has now got them on Android 7 Nougat.

Problem is now I can't see the phones files on my computer, Win7, the Title 'Computer\Moto G (4) ' appears but no files or folders can be seen, I'm wanting to transfer ringtones and music across and failing badly, tried various ideas from the web but still no go.

Yes it charges ok, I've eventually got some sense out of Motorola, it appears some models need updated Motorola device manager loaded to the computer, except that windows says it hasn't set up correctly on one computer, and hangs during setup on another. Finally managed to get ringtones to phone via Dropbox today.

Usually you need to sign into a Gmail account to access android services.
Sign in, find my account in the grid, top right, then account preferences.
It might already have saved a lot of info.
Have a look, tell it to save if not.

all you need is a gmail account on your phone.you then sync various sections such as address book etc gmail will make a backup of your contacts which you can view on your computer's gmail account and edit if you want.whenvyou get a new phone once you have reinstated your gmail account it will install all of your contacts and other stuff you selected.

Not to hi jack this thread , but I have similar problems with a Samsung Galaxy S8 . I connect USB , and the computer recognises the phone in "Computer, W7 pro " but when I try to access the files it tells me there are no files in photos or gallery (I do have files ) This was the reason that I printed them off the phone , scanned them into the computer , and then posted from there into "Lego technic" . It did work OK , but very clumsy and long winded .

When you plug your phone into the usb you should get a notification asking what you want to do with it and you need to select file transfer but I'm assuming you already know this. If it doesn't it will show up when you swipe down from the top. I don't have a G4 as went from G3 to G5

No nothing shows up when I plug into the pc but I believe the problem may be that the usb lead needs to be a data transfer cable, the one I have tried connecting with may not be good enough. I have ordered on off ebay.

to sync with google you do not need to connect with a cable, all you need is wifi password and then input in to your new phone the google account details and select sync on the phone.

Found the same problem with my Moto G when I connect to the pc its not recognised. Never had a problem with my old Samsung s3.

I have a MotoG 4.
It took me a long time to realise there is a hidden menu.

This is accessed once the data cable is plugged in and is a "swipe" down from the top of the screen. You can then select the option to download pictures etc.

Acorn.
