Smoking Policy

As an employer of a number of staff, some of who smoke, I was wondering what smoking policies you adopt around the farm seeing as it’s an addictive habit.
We operate a blanket “no tolerance” in machines and buildings under the threat of dismissal but allow smoking in open areas. Fair?

Seems fair enough.
The more the nanny state tries to tell us what to do the more I’m tempted to take up smoking.

Having been a smoker myself I haven’t introduced a smoking policy of any sort. Yes, I do have a chat with the younger staff about safety regarding flammable materials stored on the farm and how I don’t want to see fag butts all over the place but I won’t restrict their habit.

I was a heavy smoker too - 40 a day so I can see their need to feed but we bought a secondhand tractor recently that had been owned by a smoker and apart from the fact it stinks, it gave us negotiating leverage.

From what I’ve seen, No Smoking signs are only obeyed by non smokers, I had a relief miller once who I never caught smoking but I knew she was, I could smell it the far side of the cubicle shed.
There was a picture on Facebook the other day of a well known dairy farmer with loads of pi$$ take about had he got lost/ come out of hibernation etc, standing in the parlour putting a unit on, looking as happy as a pig in sh!t with a fag in his gob.:ROFLMAO:

I wouldn’t let anyone smoke in any tractors or in the buildings
I have a lad who helps me out on a rather infrequent basis, he knows I don’t approve of smoking in the tractors and I believe that to a degree he tries not to but the habit is just too strong.
That leaves me with several options, find someone else, its not so easy.
Do it myself, there’s a reason I’ve asked for extra help.
Tell him no smoking means no smoking or he can sling his hook, it’s rather infrequent work anyway so he could manage fine without the work I give him.
Or just bite my tongue and tolerate it.
