new, high quality brand, look after it, service on the dot, run for 5000hrs, if without issues run to 10000 then sell, get a fair chunk of capital back towards its replacement
It’s nice to get something better/bigger every time you trade in aswell as you’ve a good tractor to trade in

if you do less hours you can just run it more years before replacing

10 years at 1000hrs pa is the same as 20yrs at 500hrs pa really
I theory yes. In reality time depreciates them more and going by the chat on here over the years their are very few wanting to buy a 10k hr secondhand tractor which like cars at 100k miles is another depreciating milestone .

If I had to choose between two second hand 200Hp tractors, one 10 years old and one 20 and both with 10000 hours on them I would probably take the older one.

High hours on a small common rail engine intercooled and turboed to the max attached to a fly by wire cvt gearbox would send me running back to my Magnum 7210.

I think if you’re doing 1000hrs year you should be able to justify new and keep long enough to have sensible hourly running costs with warranty and the benefit of nice new machine and without the risk attached to second hand purchase.
Buy new and keep up with maintenance schedules.

If you are able to buy outright then so be it, but always get two quotes for Nil deposit and payments to match up with a). the warranty period and b). As long as the finance Co will accept ( & years ?) that way you are not deluding yourself about the costs of ownership.

1000hrs a year for new tractor , 40 hrs a week is only 25 weeks work , I don’t think 1000 hrs would touch the surface in justifying a new 200hp tractor, no way.
I've always thought 2000 hrs/yr to justify brand new for a contractor, slightly different for a farmer though, really depends on the situation

Buy new run for 5 to 6000 hrs and get rid before it needs a lot of repairs. Dairy work is not like an arable tractor only ever operating in the dry and often at set revs as it can be a lot harder on kit. Weather windows are a lot shorter in the livestock areas of the country ( our recent trip to Anglesey confirmed that last year😪) and that results in pushing machines on hard and the need for reliability which diminishes as you climb towards 10000 hrs.
A good 5000 hr tractor is worth a hell of a lot of money against a new one.

never bought new here but considering if there is no back up i would think its new with long waranty or hire so you have piece of mind that you will have a tractor in place should it break at peak time.

Probly have did 1000hrs a year on a tractor here for a few years but never though of new as we always have few that can step in to cover as we run older tractors.

You would many more would not and in ten years models gain extras that folks want .

Like what? Nothing is more important to me than reliability and almost all of the complexity that has been added to tractors over the last 20 years has made them less rather than more reliable.
It’s not about you tho is it , it’s about majority’s not minority’s and for the record I’m same as you . In ten years a model could gain 50k box could gain front suspension electric spools to name a few extras .

Thing is the market is tending to suggest that I am not in the minority.

Simple mechanical everything tractors have more or less stopped depreciating. My main two arable tractors are a Magnum 7250 and 7240 which I suspect are worth more today than they were 5 years ago even though they have done a few thousand hours extra.

If progress is defined by electric spools which are on or off and don't allow you to control flow on a simple lever then count me out.

Your preaching to the converted , I’ve two 10k he plus tractors nearing twenty plus years old, defo worth more than I paid but that’s futile as the gap will be the same or more . I don’t get why folk want Leccy spools but they do ! They want all the bling gadgets even tho some say they don’t ! The rise in value of working classics isn’t they are more popular it’s just tracking new price 20% rises when ever they feel like it .

Every new tractor we get now is full suspension 50k manual spools and no silly screens

once your used to 50k and modern cab full suspension you really don’t want to go back :ROFLMAO:
