Snow. Quick rant.

Around 1960 - I remember our headmaster (who lived in the school house ) came onto the playground at the end of break. " How is your slide boys" he said. "There is a bare bit in the middle" we said, "could you tip a bucket of water on it tonight and it should be great tomorrow" He did and it was.
Don`t think that would happen today

We had one at our juniors, evil bend at the end where kids jumped off into a snowdrift..... I went round the corner and head-butted the railings!:whistle:

These days I would have made a mint!! :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Still got the scar..... 18 stitches... makes me look like Action Man. :)

Whats the A40 like now?
Clear down my end, im just of the A465 between Abergavenny and Hereford, Monmouth council had a plough and gritter running all day Sunday keeping the road open. Council did good (y) but i guess it got worse over in Powys the council has different aproach.

Sunday: The trust were appealing for clinical staff to come in to cover those who couldn`t.
Monday: Trustwide e-mail: If you can`t come in because of chidcare (schools being shut) you have to take it as annual leave or unpaid.

Lots of very,very unhappy folk.
What are they unhappy about? Not being paid to stay at home or unhappy with the teachers for not turning in?

I actually saw my first bit of black tarmac today since Saturday night. I had to go through Hereford to Peterchurch to help a care worker as I had been brought out of "retirement" with the local 4x4 Response Group, more like all the regular peeps had gone back to work. Met the carer in the village and took her all of 400 yards to her clients house! Feck me, but driven 16 miles there for that! I know she was a bit on the rotund side but it wouldn't have killed her to walk, she'd driven part way up to the housing estate but was worried as her car was spinning so turned round and had to wait the hour before I had been told and then got there.
What an absolute waste of my time and the Council's money when they pay for my diesel on the round trip.
It wasn't as if she was carrying anything either :banghead:

The latter....... pretty much everything else is functioning ...... buses were off for a bit on Sunday but all the main roads are clear and its easy enough to get around..... apart from schools.

My daughter is at home due to her college being closed (not a problem for us as she's old enough and I'm "on holiday"), missus has still gone out to work.
Had a failed feed delivery this morning because the lanes aren't fit to drive a lorry on. Have put a request in to the council to have the road gritted, hpe they get round before 9am tomorrow when the lorry will be back to try again (we're out of feed by mid day tomorrow).

Can't be far from the mrs home. Had she of travelled yesterday would still have to deal with the powys stretch of the A40:poop:

PS: I walked in today........ pavements are like skating rinks.. no fecker clears them like we used too when I was a kid. First thing we had to do was clear the path and the front with a snow-board. Everyone chipped in on the estate. Mind you we had to to walk anywhere..... now its all about cars.
When I lived in Denmark, each householder was responsible for clearing the snow from the footpath in front of their own house (contractors would charge house holders to provide that service - so people would not have to bother, just pay an annual fee), and all garages had their own mini tractor with a rotary brush to clear snow off their forecourt, anyway, any snow, life continued as normal.

Powys aren't the best, back roads are very poor state, B roads average, pavements are very dangerous schools shut since Friday lunch time. Very few snow ploughs in use.

Denbighshire are no better, just get used to not getting the roadsides cut when needed or snow cleared effectively.

Was chaos on the A494,Clwyd Gate area on Friday.

It’s not as if the snow wasn’t forecast.

Any council worker who can’t get to work should be required to work in their locality to clear footpaths etc.

Goodness knows how the country would cope with a 47/63 event.

Mind,winters not finished yet.:nailbiting:

Why the who-ha about schools being closed. I'm not a parent, so maybe getting childcare for the day may be a pain and that be the reason. Doesn't snow that often so why not let the kids enjoy the white stuff, only one day. I still love a snow day! Haven't had one for almost 4 years :(
Because in our village and the next at least there WAS NO SNOW! So why did the school not open? I know for a fact that the headmaster and at least one teacher live in the local town and they could have driven to work without any problem. The other teacher lives in the village so could have walked in. It not only causes inconvenience to parents who have to take time off work (and therefore their employers and their employer's customers) but also teaches children that if there's a slight weather issue they don't have to bother going to school. When said children grow up will they make an effort to get to work if it snows a bit?

Daughters been off since Friday. Postman hasn't been here since Thursday. My brother has got in to work without injury everyday he drives a Peugeot 206. He was saying folk at hospital have been off work because it's too dangerous! It's has gone a little insane, all because of 150mm of snow. I decided not to touch my lane (700metres) as I may do more harm than good, top marks to Mr milk Tanker who has been coming in around 2am and going back up the hill without an issue. Those guys know how to drive! Unlike soppy susan spinning away in Aldi car park in her volvo 4x4 lookalike!

Shed Load.
I understand not everyone can keep vehicles under cover in snow, but many are driving about with a foot deep load of snow on the roof. Caught an unexpected roof load this morning on the A49.. Can't be that difficult to clear most of it off before driving.?

Yup pure lazy... I came out of Manchester 6.30am Monday and the amount of cars with a thick snow topped roof and back windows still covered on the M60 & M56 was unreal.
