SNP/Green coalition

They’re not calling it a coalition, but effectively that’s what it is. The greens are now in government for the first time anywhere in the UK with less than 2% of the constituency vote.

Thoughts for the faring of Scottish Ag through this parliament?

I was wondering if there was a thread about that, just heard on the radio, if UK agriculture is in trouble with DEFRA, I expect Scottish farming will be in double trouble now with the Greens having a finger in the pie. I try to do lots on the farm here for the environment and fauna/flora but I often struggle with having anything much good to say about conservationists except that they are often nice people.

The paradox is if farming gets tight with the withdrawal of subsidies then every acre will need to pay it's way & rewilding & trees are fine as long as any compensatory payments are guaranteed indefinitely otherwise it is just a temporary sticking plaster.

Mates north of the border tell me that the Scottish Greens are as b@tshit crazy as they come, especially that Harvie bloke. I feel sorry for those in the farming community that are going to have to put up with the BS they're all but guaranteed to have inflicted upon them by the watermelon communists.

No, no , no, you fellows have it all wrong; the SNP are entirely rational and competent regarding their economic, fiscal and business polices, this must be true because they've told us so. And, this being so, it's entirely reasonable to expect that their agricultural and environmental polices will be equally sensible and realistic and will create a better, healthier, happier and greener Scotland. 😐

I’m no fan of the SNP, but I thought their rural policy was actually reasonably functional and sensible. Proportionally rural economics are much more important to Scotland than the UK as a whole. However, I strongly suspect that this chink of light of competence will now be extinguished in the name of a much more extreme agenda. My predictions for the next five years:

Grouse shooting will be banned. Its low hanging fruit for both parties.
Fieldsports in general will come under a lot of pressure.

The red meat industry is going to come under a lot of pressure.

Greening/rewilding will be turbocharged.

Not directly ag related but it affects us all, the social justice fruitbats now have their hands firmly on the levers of power and will continue to force through their extreme ideology via schools, universities and the civil service.

Does anyone have a more optimistic outlook? Or will I sell my guns, disperse the flock and home school the kids?!

Just seen this on the news, this is clearly snp looking to be down with the kids, soooo transparent it hurts, so sad that first in the hit list will be cows as it’s the hot thing to blame, real world common sense simply does not exist anymore, just watched an advert for electric cars on tv, made me wonder if we are in such a climate crisis cars seem such a waste of resource even if they are electric , surly we should be going back to staying local local jobs ect but nooooooo that would be infringing Human rights. The whole thing is a hipocrits dream 🛌

There seems to be bizarre phenomenon in scottish politics which I have seen first hand in people I know who are pro independence and peo snp.

That is they are often fiercely anti immigration (don't want scotland ending up like england).

Very much against so called "progressive" Policies such as gender neutral toilets.

Very much pro north sea oil.

Yet have delivered to power people who are doing the exact opposite of what the claim they want! I'm wondering when exactly they are going to wake up tbh. Maybe this will finally let them see the light but I doubt it

Depends what generation you talk to and whether they leant towards Salmond or Sturgeon. Don’t forget the SNP basically just hoovered up the labour/catholic vote, neither of which were traditionally known to be particularly socially progressive.
