So how does AD work ?

Presumably when the methane produced from AD is burnt it produces carbon dioxide?
The theory is that the plant has absorbed CO2 from the atmosphere it the first place, therefore it is returning it to whence it came, unlike burning gas that's been buried for thousands of years. Of course, that ignores the all the non-bio diesel currently burnt in the tractors to produce the crop and any carbon extracted from the soil....

Sounds remarkably like the arguments that we use for ruminants which are consistently ignored! 🤔

It’s also the same as the natural process that takes place in a cow’s stomach…..which yesterday and today has been paraded in front of the conference as part of the methane “problem”.

Cows are largely farting out methane, whereas AD is burning the methane & releasing CO2. Methane is believed to have a greater effect on climate change than CO2. From my understanding of the science it is plausible, but the volume of methane & its effect in comparison to the effects of the CO2 released in pursuit of tourism is another matter!

Globally speaking, cows are fed lots of soya & concentrates etc. & that either involves lots of artificial fertiliser or burning down the rainforests both of which is releasing masses of carbon into the atmosphere that was otherwise sequestered elsewhere.

There is beginning to be a bit of recognition that cows in the UK tend to be grass fed & less reliant on soya etc, but the same cannot be said of elsewhere & the numbers don't stack up very well for maintaining the same level of global consumption by relying solely on grass fed etc.
