So much for market forces......

To all those backing the removal of farm subsidies in the UK take a look across to whats happening in the republic of ireland, a bad year for beef prices and the government is giving them an extra support package ontop of the hefty subs they already have, £93 per head for fattners and £40ish/cow for suckler herds, they are our biggest competition for beef production with the majority of their beef flooding into the UK, produced in a much milder climate with superior grass growth AND much higher subsidies, should we just stop producing altogether and let the irish supply us? or support our own farmers, tell you what why dont the UK government double our subs and let us start undercutting them??

Think there is a similar scheme in Scotland as well.

Never much understood suckler economics though.
The annual cow cost is basically the weaned calf cost. Then that calf needs to support itself and the farm. That can be beaten by buying the calf and not having the cow surely?

If you feel the need to tag all the people you want to reply to this thread just do it at the bottom of your original post, I'm sure as regular posters they will all see the thread anyway without being tagged.

The money for the scottish system is taken off the budget so we get less per acre, this is to try and incentivise farmers not to sell their cows

Subs just subsidise high land prices and new tractors. No subs and market forces would drive down land prices, allow new entrants into farming and bring in much fresh blood to an industry whose average age is around 60. Discuss.
I agree with most of that, but I don't think land prices will drop, that's all to do with tax relief. Subsidy would be less than 1% yield around here.
