fella in my yard today applies 4 cwt/acre, thinks others might use 6
He reckons it might -fag packet maths here- give him a tonne an acre.
So £120 worth of fert gains £200 worth of corn....not allowing for other extra inputs.
Still stacks up.
Further analysis - which would need bigger fag packet- was the job won't work on poor ground, as there isn't an extra tonne to be had.

If your agronomist is also selling then you need to change agronomist.
He will no doubt also say you need x and y snake oil to make up for reduction in N dose. You don't.

The problem is the weather risk element. Back in the UK we were always at about 9 tonnes. Always applied imputs accordingly. Then 2012 comes along, same inputs but fusarium comes along and you end up with 6.5 tonnes of crap. Blows the figures out the water and basically you would be better off with low input, low output and low risk system

Bear in mind us lucky producers in Western Europe have been operating with the safety net of government subsidy for a very long time.
I think we can all learn a great deal from studying the input versus output regime in the unsubsidised regions of the world,
Where we have the land, resources, and infrastructure similar to the extensive systems of Australia and Canada and the US, we can survive if we adapt. Where we have 5 acre fields and topographical challenges, we will need to scratch our heads and adapt accordingly.
