So what if the fert price doesn't stabilise by August

he uses 4cwt total for wheat?
'corn'....we didn't get as far as specifying which.
(and since we were gas axing holes in my telehandler boom, i didn't really want to distract him overly)

He's from hellish strong red soil, so I'd anticipate their not having to chuck as many granules on as some.

The problem is the weather risk element. Back in the UK we were always at about 9 tonnes. Always applied imputs accordingly. Then 2012 comes along, same inputs but fusarium comes along and you end up with 6.5 tonnes of crap. Blows the figures out the water and basically you would be better off with low input, low output and low risk system 👍
You were lucky to get 6.5t/ha in 2012
4.5t/ha was the go round here

No second wheat. We’ve pushed extra wheat this year because we bought fert cheap, so got it on fields that should really have been a spring crop for BG, so we have kind of set up ourselves up well if fert prices stay high. Maybe a few beans but not much. some osr as usual but not loads.
more malting barley spring/winter and spring oats. Cheap and easy to grow, profitable. Grain storage not a worry for malting barley and new oat mill going up on one of our CS sites Which should be good.

Around here if fertiliser prices don't sort themselves I predict a lot of maize being grown on land that would normally have had a cereal crop.
thought you were going to say, with only sh1t under it.
how much N would you put on a 1st w wheat, on very strong ground, that hasn't been in corn, for decades, been in a rye followed by maize, for 3 years, and had about 3in of slurry, in that time, it's looking good now.

For the first time in over 20 years, I’m not growing any maize this year, so going to have to grow spring barley with just manure . How much I dare put under it , is the question . Might be best to store some of the solid muck for next years autumn crops . Or sell some ?

We put about the maximum we could of cattle manure under some spring barley last year and you couldn;t tell the difference where we ran out accross the field in terms of yield or it going down.
