So what is the strategy?

I'm.not sure why people think it can be eliminated, virtually no other virus that is anywhere nearly infectious has without a 95 % plus vaccine and as the Corona viruses tend to mutate that is unlikely in this case, better treatments are the key to lower deaths and it appears that the issues it causes in the blood are often the cause of death.

Should be easy to eliminate - island nation, not wind borne, no insect vectors, no vertical transmission, no carrier status like Herpes, not particularly contagious, no major mutations so far. If they’d asked the vets to get rid of it, it would be gone by now (might have been some culling though, especially of politicians...)

Yes easy if every person stays at home for a month and I mean every person so no food, no health care, no electric, no telly, no internet etc etc , I wonder how many deaths that would cause.

Becoming increasing confused by the way this whole situation is being presented to the public by the media and the govt. And I suspect the public are by and large not grasping the whole situation either.

People are talking about "peaks" in some countries as if it could be over soon. If 70% of the population have had it and recovered then maybe we can get ready to pop the cork but it looks highly unlikely that we are anywhere near those levels. If only 10% have had it we are miles away from a "peak". The curve is being lowered through lockdown and people are being fooled into thinking its over.

If i go on facebook and read what friends are saying its obvious most people think this whole lockdown is so they avoid it altogether. They are being duped into thinking this whole thing is about containment when its clearly long past that stage.

I have seen numerous posts shared on social media of people sick and their relatives pleading that others obey the rules and "stay safe". I have seen others post to complain that non locals were stopping at local shop when passing through the local village and they were angry that they could be "bringing it here".

Although we can all celebrate any decline in deaths and new cases, it simply does not eliminate the problem long term. The second you remove restrictions it will be away again.

A vaccine seems a long way off

Authorities seem in no hurry to try any possible drugs to combat the virus

That leaves us with herd immunity as the only way out of this. That relies on us all getting it and hopefully we will have antibodies for sufficient time that we will not get it again.
Most people that have got it are not showing that they aquired antibodies or people that have any antibodies are not retaining them for a very short peroid. To me its like Virus phenumonia you dont get immunity by getting it

And then what? No one ever allowed into or out of UK at any land , sea and airport without compulsory 14 days quarantine - and would have to include the airplane staff and ship staff. Unlike a high health pig or chicken unit where isolation is possible it is not with humans, though I note Sturgeon is trying her best.

If the UK had a government that knew what it was doing and had a plan, it would be possible to eliminate and control any future reinfections. But it's a matter of having competent testing (or even just symptom analysis) coupled to a first rate track and trace system that has the necessary power to quarantine. But speed is the key, it becomes futile chasing cases and contacts that are already 2 weeks old. And IMO the UK still has too many daily cases to solely rely on track and trace without many other restrictions still being retained.

Yes of course that's the answer, compare an island with around 90 000 to one with 67 million. The biggest scary bit is that you are probably serious
