A friend who died 3 years ago in his 90s made 2 trips from Southend on sea to Newmarket in the 1940s with a Ford model N. A wagon plus assortment of tut plus an early baler. Brakes were non existent apparently.

I was in a local dealers yard a few years ago (Lincs) a guy pulled in with a LR 90 and Ifor trailer , hooked the trailer on a case IH 956/1056 loaded the 90 on the trailer and set off back to Devon .

I have an vert good idea who that was. Red LRs they have now.
They do that on a regular basis. Given the "cross country " route from lincs to Devon the speed travelled with a tractor was very similar to a either a LR and trailer or a lorry.

Grandad used to travel from home to Dorset then back up to Inverness in the late 40s with 2 lend/lease combines and a couple ex army trucks. Used to get from home to scotch corner on the 1st day. Top speed was 20mph. Took the drive chains off the combines, removed rear axle and fitted a dolly, pulled them in reverse behind the trucks. 250 - 300 mile a day.

Contractors covering big road miles isn’t a modern phenomenon 🤣

No would be a dealer in mid devon I was thinking of. 2 guys working together used to buy very tidy machines from Eastern Counties and bring down, smarten up some more polish and let loose on the stock farmers of the South West.

I am sure the previous owners would not like a photo of some of their beloved machines 12 months later!

A local contractor who happened to be the grandfather of a famous infamous welsh rugby player, bought a Field Marshall, threshing drum and a stationary baler in Cambridge in the 1950's and drove the whole lot back to Brecon. Approx 200 miles.

Back in the early 90's the beat up old Renault 80 something had to be taken with the Haulm topper from the south Devon coast to the north Devon coast.

Owners son had the short straw and given the task.
What he didn't know was there was an issue with the gear box and 13mph was fastest speed.
The only instruction was don't let too much traffic build up behind you!

It was put on a low loader next time it was moved.

I remember in 1976 when feed and straw were desperately short swveral Welsh farmers hooked their balers and trailer behind tractors and drove to the Eastern counties to bale everything in site. Got us a little cross as we suddenly had to start paying money for this stuff we used to get for clearing the fields before choppers

i believe that in north angus a steel fabricator/blacksmith/engineer had a massey 65/165? which was used to haul steel from motherwell to his works. this was back in the late 60's early 70's. when we moved in 68 from aberdeenshire to south kincardineshire we had 4 loads on trailers behind super and power majors. 70miles each way with bicycle rear lights on the back of the trailers.

Cant remember if ive mentioned it before, we (Bartletts) left a fairly new JD 6910 & poly winder at Holkam in a field after lifting carrots. it wasnt collected / found / missed untill the next harvest when we were missing a polly winder . we found it still attached to the tractor where it was left

Old chap I know told us how when he was a lad on a farm in the war the Marshall had to go back to Gainsborough to repaired, can't remember whether it went back on the train or a lorry. Not sure why but it couldn't be returned the same way so the tractor driver went to Gainsborough on the train and drove it home to Newport south wales
